One of my friends want to know more details about the requirement of having to stay 3 years out of five years in Canada to keep the PR status valid.

Is this requirement for each block of 5 years? For example assuming I landed in Canada in Jan 2001, according to the requirement I can stay in Canada until Jan 2004 and spend the rest of the 2 years outside until Jan 2006. The question is - Do I have to return to Canada after Jan 2006, or I can continue to stay outside for a further period of 2 years( from the next block of five years) and return in Jan 2008?

I know the answer must be somewhere on the immigration website, but right now I feel lazy and could do with some help.
