Dear CDs,

I landed in Toronto as a new immigrant in November 2004 and stayed there for a month. Presently, I am in Karachi and would like to file the tax returns for 2004 for my wife and me. Could somebody answer my following queries:

1) Do I have to file both the federal and provincial returns, if I do what are the forms;
2) Can I complete and mail the from karachi to the relevant tax office in toronto; or should I hire a consultant to file the returns on my behalf.

Please do keep in mind that since I would be filling my first return it has to be a paper return and I am not expected to be back in Toronto till Aug-05
Regards

nyk

I would highly appreciate a response from fellow CDs

In Ontario, the provincial return is part of T1 general return and you do not have to file any separate provincial return. You can use any software online, prepare your return free of cost and mail it the relevant tax office. You do not have to hire any consultant for the same.

Did you have any employment income during the period you stayed in Toronto. If yes, then any income tax was deducted by your employer. Similarly for your wife also, if there was no income and you do not owe any tax then you can even file your NIL return now or in August when you come to Canada or you can file both tax year (2004 & 2005) in 2006 without any penalties.
