What are the Job Prospects for an Oracle Applications Consultant with 2-3 years of experience?
Thanks

Even at the risk of sounding like a soothsayer, I think the prospects for Oracle Apps Developers are extremely bright.
SHORT TERM
Most of the Oracle eBusiness Suite is written using Forms, Report Writer and PL/SQL and that is not going to change overnight. Hence maintenance and small time development activity would continue . Consultants could further increase their prospects by developing reporting writing skills using Discoverer and gaining functional expertise in at least one complete business process such as Procure-to-Pay, Order-to-Cash, Manufacturing etc.
The only dark cloud in the horizon is the growing amount of technical/development jobs being outsourced to India.
MEDIUM TERM
There is a noticeable shift to Java centric applications. PeopleSoft Enterprise One 8.11 (formerly J D Edwards) now owned by Oracle I believe is web enabled using Java extensively. Oracle also has been making pronouncements that further enhancements would be Java bsed. Hence there could be the growing importance of JDeveloper. Hence consultants may start looking into this IDE a as potential future growth area.
LONG TERM
Any body's guess.
Just sharing my thoughts. Please chip in with your opinion.

It is difficult to opine on individual cases. Generally speaking, of course there is scope for someone with the skill sets you have mentioned.
In fact , I think I noticed a job posting on Workopolis yesterday Mar28/05, requiring someone with Developer 2000 + some more. So go for it.
Bottomline - DON'T GIVE UP

I think you have raised a million-dollar question, probably on the mind of every IT professional at a crossroad or would be IT professionals deciding on which path to take. Let’s make some educated guesses.
If you had to base your decision on the current job trend then SAP definitely takes the cake. The surge in SAP jobs would also indicate that IT spending is “happening” (SAP does not come cheap) and very soon other companies with different platforms (Oracle Apps for instance) would follow suit, in order to maintain their competitive edge.
However, if I was to embark on a technology learning process today, then one of the most important criteria that I would consider is – Who is backing that technology? In other words does the company have the MONEY POWER and therefore the STAYING POWER. In this regard, Microsoft, SAP , IBM are all good bets. Oracle does not fall far behind, but its recent merger with PeopleSoft has to work.
Secondly, I need to consider the learning curve and staying on top. SAP seems to have a steep learning curve and moreover access to SAP systems may be difficult (Please correct me, if otherwise). On the other hand Oracle provides an on-line library with excellent tutorials. You can also download the latest versions of the database, application server, developer suite for a limited period and practice as much as you want and stay current.
I am sure there are a host of other factors also which other forum members can highlight which would assist you in making an informed decision.
Cheers,

Partha, Thank You for your very informative post. A lot of our friends have suggested Oracle Apps but we are not sure if it has any scope in Canada or not. I welcome all members to provide us with their views.
Thanks
