I think the fact that he got away with it for a year was bad enough, I'm sure nobody would've verified his stories before letting him into the white house press corps. And yes, he was chided, but hey, many people feel it was too little too late. And to top it all off, he went on to write a book about how he did it...

I'm sure if we dig deep enough, we can find enough cases of people having duped the govt. with made-up cases of heroism in the most developed nations.

Certainly does not exonerate this guy. In this case though, I think the media and the govt. are more to blame than this stupid family. Most likely, how this would have started is these guys printed a fake certificate to show off to their relatives and friends and someone mentioned this stuff to someone in the media and the story blew out of all proportions without room for damage control.
