Hi
I understand that the private medical insurance is calculated on a per day basis (for e.g. $2 per day), till the OHIP kicks in.
Now, if someone lands in the LAST week of March and applies for OHIP in that week itself, from when would the OHIP kick in? Will it start from 1st June or from LAST week of June?
Is the waiting period for OHIP taken as 90 days straight away from the day of application, or is it taken on a monthly basis, i.e. if I apply in last week of March, the whole of March, April, & May is taken as the waiting period, and subsequently the OHIP kicks in from 1st of June.
Can someone clarify about this point???
Also, I have a pre-existing condition (it had occurred long time back, and now I am perfectly OK), which is marked in the Landing Paper. CHC has advised me to visit a hospital upon landing in Canada for health monitoring & advice. Any idea what is the cost of this, and whether it would be covered by insurance or not??
Need urgent advice.

As far as i know preexisting conditions are not covered by private health insurance.
If you visit a doctor in walk-in-clinic, he/she would charge you around $40 for consultation. I am not sure how much hospitals charge for people without OHIP card. Prescription drugs in general are very expensive here and apart from that you have to pay $5-$15 to pharmacist for dispensing fees each time you buy medication.

Hi Sumjo,
Most likely at your landing port the immigration officer would ask you to provide an address where you would be staying. If you have pre arranged accomodation at any of your relatives or are going to use their address for mailing purpose, that address would be recorded by the immigration officer and after some time in mail you would receive a letter from Health Canada to undergo some tests. This letter generally comes after 3-4 weeks of your arrival or later and gives you a time frame of 3-4 weeks to undergo those tests.
Now your OHIP would trigger only after 3 calendar months are over, you would have to pay for these tests yourselves which could be quite costly. But, if you do not provide them the results in the time stipulated, they would again send you a reminder and by the time the reminder comes, you probably would have completed your 3 months and would be eligible for OHIP coverage. Or, alternatively, you can contact them on the number mentioned in the letter that you are waiting for your OHIP coverage and would undergo these tests and provide them the results and they might (most likely) would let you do that, hence do not worry unnecessary too much about the same. However, make sure to apply for OHIP immediately after your arrival so that you get the OHIP card well in time.

The authorities have mailed me a form which mentions that I need to contact a hospital within 30 days of landing for health monitoring/advice.
Now, (supposing they don't give a damn about my request about waiting for the OHIP to kick in before the doc. visit/tests) can they force me to visit a hospital before the OHIP kicks in, and what if I don't?
Would that be an excuse for deportion/or any other legal action on their part?
Just want to know, what would be the likely cost (approx.).
As per the Govt. website, I think OHIP kicks in for new immigrants after a straight 90 days from landing. Correct???

I do not know the nature of the work you might be seeking or if you have a job offer in Ontario. May be you can land in Alberta or Manitoba or some other province who do not have waiting period of 90 days before their healthcare scheme comes into effect. You can later come to Ontario. Find out! Google should be able to give you link for provincial government website and for healthcare in that province.
I think it will be difficult for someone to guess the cost of hospitalization and tests. No one knows your condition (and I don't think it should be discussed in public forum also) or what the doctor is going to recommend for you!

Don't worry of the cost of examination fees. There are community clinics where a new immigrant not covered under OHIP are treated. You have to contact local community centre where you are staying in Canada for the community clinic. Then go to the community clinic with your forms and immigration proof. They will provide you with all the medical assistance free of cost.

Even emergency hospitalisation, surgery(if required) etc. etc.? That's really wonderful. That means we can do without med. insurance during the initial 3 months. Am I right?
