Hello CDs,

Many thanks for your prompt reply!

Now, May I ask you for some advice/(s) too...

1) Do you think I have to get familiar with any of these popular softwares before I land in Canada?

you may be able to get training before you get here, but its pointless... if you are offered a job in a company that has deployed any of the erp systems, you will be asked to undergo training anyway... i personally dont think for accountants, its important to be versed in the tools used... but rather in the policies and practices of gaap...

Quote:
2) How can I do that?

by spending lots and lots of money... erp training is not cheap...

3) Or is it ok if I have good knowledge and experience in Accounts and Admin area - I can manage to work on any of those softwares which you have named?

unless you are IT focused, the choice of software used by an employer can be overcome...

Quote:
4) Are there any courses available in Toronto / Calgary to learn any one of those softwares?

most erp vendors have training sections on their websites... both peoplesoft and sap have very extensive lists of upcoming training sessions all over north america...

but again, if you want to do it yourself, it is very very very expensive... a typical three day peoplesoft course costs around US$4000, excluding expenses...

Quote:
5) Do employers in Canada provide opportunities to learn on the job?

almost all employers have frequent in house and outsourced training for new employee orientation and refresher courses and skills upgrades for existing ones...

I think it will help if you are familiar with SAPand other software, I am in accounting but from the USA and I got a job within 2 weeks of being here, but I had worked for major Oil & Gas companies and I am based in Calgary....I had no questions asked about my credentials or the usual canadian experience

Hello Seeta,

Many thanks for your prompt reply. I am also planning to land in Calgary - by April 2005. I would like to know more details about accountant's career prospects over there. Can I write to you directly, please?

If you don't have experience in SAP don't plan to invest for training
Here employer always ask for SAP live implementation experienece and that too in specific areas like AP/AR/GL/ Costing ,Material Ledger,Treasury etc
Only getting training in not enough

I'm using Quickbook as my accounting software. I've found that it is pretty easy to learn and manage. It's a lot like just balancing your checkbook. There is also extensive training and help available to get you up and running.

Accounting jobs involve understanding of GAAP standards and the ability to analyze the same. If you are an accountant, most software/packages have similar look and feel. It does not matter if you are aware of the app. Your employer will train you in the app used. Other common apps I have not seen above are Peoplesoft and Oracle modules. These are usually customized based on the clients requirements by the vendor.

You can expect to be trained in these apps by your employer as long as your accounting fundamentals are strong. CA, CPA or CFA certification is usually required to get a foot in the door.
