Dear CD's
One of my family friend, who used to be in Gulph (Automobile industry) relocated to India around the same time as me.. He was suffering from depression and lived with his mother, wife and children. He committed suicide 2 years back. Hos wife and children (Canadian citizens with OCI) are living with their mother in law but since her MIL is harassing her, she wants to relocate to Canada.

I gave her the following option :
1. Her 2 children aged 7 and 9 will bring in $ 900 per month in CCTB
2. Her single mother status with two children will bring in $ 1041 per month (It is not clear if she will get this from day 1 or after 1 year residency in the province that she chooses to be in).
3. The GST credit will bring her $ 100 a month. (First payment after 4 or 5 months only and paid on a quarterly basis)
4. Relocate to Vancouver as the climate is good throughout the year.

Now the expenses :
1. Two bedroom apartment $ 1200
2. food expenses $ 300 (Includes some food bank visits and may be free breakfast at school for children).
3. Transport (Bus pass) $ 120
4. Misc expenses $ 200
5. Cell phone / cable / internet - $ 200

Receipt $ 2041 Expenses $ 2020

As you can see, it is almost break even. She is having Rs 5 lakhs which she is going to bring to Vancouver and keep it for safety. This 5 lakhs will also pay for the flight ticket to Vancouver.

How do CD's see this plan ? Can someone comment on it ?

I gave her the same plan over a year go, but at that time the CCTB was just $ 225 per child and she was getting around $ 400 defecit per month. But from this August, Canada has increased the CCTB payouts so now it makes sense.

As she has small children, she may not be able to do a full time job (She is BE in Civil Engineering) but may be she can work part time for a few hours in the local Timmy or Mac Donalds.

Murali.

Side note - She invited me also to live as a common law husband in Vancouver but since I am taking care of my mother I declined. Once my mother's life is over, I may take up the offer.

Yes, I agree Vancouver is pretty expansive place to settle down. Find a way to do so in GTA itself.

Thanks you. Much obliged. I will pass it on to my friend.

The savings mentioned is teriffic. I have mentioned only the maximum expenses and she will always like below that. With the savings mentioned, it looks like she can save $ 300 per month atleast and this translates to $ 3600 a year, and $ 36,000 in a decade, which is very good.

Some point that she had raised to me before :

1. She needs a 2 bedroom as he may likely find a common law partner and they will share expenses.

2. Vancouver is preferred for her as she was really depressed with Toronto weather. She does not to work in a full time job as she has small children to care for. She is OK with living on Welfare as long as the minimum expenses mentioned are met.

3. She would like to know where white people majorly live (for good schools) and where she can get 2 bed apartments for $ 1200. It should also be accessible to transport which will lead her to the sky train / metro in limited travel time. May be surrey or langley and the like.

4. She wants a bus pass as she wants to be outside most of the time (in shopping malls). Besides, she is hoping that like Toronto she can take her kids for free on weekends. Monthly bus pass is mandatory for her.

5. I shall google on the Ontario Trillum benifit (OTB) and advice her. Is it some sort of free extended insurance program ?

Thank you all.

She is much fixed to only move to Vancouver due to its moderate climate and she is requesting white dominated area wherein she can get a 2 bed apartment for $ 1000 to $ 1200. Since she is not planning to do any job (may be just some minimal cash job), she can even stay far in the suburbs. But she wants to do sightseeing on the weekends.

The one year residency in BC required to access welfare seems to be a moot point. I am trying to see if they will waive it off for her since she is a Cdn Citizen and had already lived in Ontario for 9 years, before moving out.

On behalf of the lady in question, I had just applied her situation in Vancouver and got the following results :

Eligibility Estimate
Based on the information provided, you may be eligible for assistance. The estimated monthly eligibility amount is $1101.06

Note: Effective September 1, 2015, government will no longer deduct child support payments from income and disability assistance calculations.

This is an estimate only. Your application for assistance is NOT complete. If you decide to apply, your actual eligibility will be determined during your interview. If you still want to apply, click on the green ?Next Step? button below to continue the application process.

Note: This eligibility estimate may not apply to persons with a Life Threatening Health Need (LTHN). If you have a LTHN, complete this application, then please contact the ministry directly at 1-866-866-0800.

IMPORTANT: Your information has NOT been sent to the ministry.

Your information will be stored for 5 days only. If you want to submit an application later, you will need your Assessment ID and password. The ministry is NOT able to access this information for you.

If you cannot provide identification it may affect your eligibility for regular assistance.

The questionaire did not ask for any residency requirements but it did state that one has has to be off assistance for atleast 2 years prior to the application date. In this case, the applicant was off assistance but outside of Canada.

But still there is hope. Anyone not qualifying for the above will have another scheme (which is of lesser value) that they will be eligible for.

Lady in question has booked her tickets to reach Vancouver by Jan 28th of 2017.

Right now, she is on the Internet (Kijiji) for rental accomodation.

She told me that in Burnaby - rent is minimum $ 1200 for a bedroom suite.

However in Surrey (Which is just on the border to Burnaby), rents starts from $ 700 for a one bed and one wash room basement suite.

It does up to $ 1000 for a two bed, one bath apartment or $ 1100 for a two bed and two bath apartment. She is targeting the $ 1100 range.

As I see prices are still low (though you are not having the choice as you get in the GTA). Plus all these areas are saying that its is 1 min to the busstop and 15 mins walk to the metro station, which is quite good.

Next she is going to relate the housing area to the schools.

It is fund that in Burnaby, all are asking for working professionals, credit score, references where in in Surrey, it is absent.

Hope Febpreeth will update us more on this, so that the lady and her children can optimize on the costs.

Because of Desi Junta.

While Surrey does not border Burnaby, and there is another city 'New Westminster' between Surrey and Burnaby, her ideal option would be to stay somewhere in the vicinity of Skytrain station. I would recommend browsing through the Skytrain map on the 'www.translink.bc.ca' site and find the rentals around the stations. Burnaby is the costlier, next would be New West, and then Surrey. The areas near Surrey's 4 Skytrain stations are up and coming with lots of brand new Condo development. Schools around these neighborhoods are not that great as traditionally these neighborhoods have been low income and populated with the poor immigrants and refugees. However, the demography is fast changing as well as the overall feel.

Another option is to find someplace a bit farther from the station with a bus connection. The schools are a bit better and the cost would not be too different. Here are a couple of good/decent neighborhoods with mix demography:

1. Fleetwood
2. Panorama Ridge
3. Sullivan Station/Heights
4. Cloverdale
5. Clayton

All of the above areas have a direct bus connections to the Train station with an average of 30 -45 minutes commute.

Also, consider that most of the quality jobs are in Vancouver, Burnaby, and Richmond.

If she is only interested in living around Desis then Surrey is a better option. It is the Brampton of Metro Vancouver.

Rest, Craigslist is your friend's friend for finding the rental apptt based upon her budget.
