This helps .

Since I am familiar with Etobicoke , I can name some schools / neighborhoods where schools are / ought to be good .

Kingsway / Royal York ... Our neighbors once told me that they could afford a house else where but were renting an apartment here because of the school .

Royal York / Queensway - There's a very good school on Royal York before Queensway.. when going South.

In fact the area South of Eglinton , North of Bloor or a little extended to Queensay East of Renforth and West of Royal York is a nice area and schools ought to be good .

Reviving this perhaps one of the best school district related thread.

After a long of reasoning, have realized that it will have to be a mix of good school, community, commuting and pricing to form a combination.... having the best of something, will have to make you compromise on something else.

Shortlisted North York (incl. till Thornhill) , Etobicoke & Scarborough.

Etobicoke I am aware of - Richview / Bishop Allen/ Martingrove as the better HS. ... anything south of Eglinton is good.

Looking to know about North York & Thornhill. - if anyone can provide recommendations on good schools , if not the best .... Aware about Mc Gee.

Same thing for Scarborough. -There must be some good schools and neighborhoods in Scarborough as well .... not well aware with that city - How s Agincourt ? Recommendations welcomed please.

It is good networking and I will second this. We have not done such reviews and compiling and I will add my two bits here to it. Hope this helps.

I do agree that a child / student should feel comfortable in the schools so as to realize his / her full potential .... Which makes me ask (no racism intended ) - whether an Indian kid would feel comfortable in a predominant whites or Chinese school and the same the other way round ?

So it needs to be balanced for sure ..

I am slightly skeptical about putting an average kid in an above average graded school ..... Please understand me and then correct me ( I might need that here ) :)

I believe that your company will always have an effect on you ... if my kid is average and I put him/her in an above average school , chances are that he / she may only be bettered by her company ( obviously as long as he/she feels comfortable ) ..... Isn't that the reason why parents compete to put their kids in better known schools even in India ?

Like I said , I might need to be corrected here ... please do so .

Sorry I kind of abandoned this thread and never read this. Thanks for reviving. Seems like you have already made a decision (of my liking) to go for a mix of everything.

In my view (and I had this experience first hand when we lived in predominantly chinese area) , This is nothing to do with racism but everything to do with attitude of parents belonging to different background and how they prepare their kid for the school.
Certain communities put extra effort at home and other have different priorities for the kids. Teacher's attitude towards teaching the kids change based on this fact. If your kid is not in the majority, it may not play well with him and you may not at times match the expectations coming from schools. Faltu ka challenge! So better to be at place where there is good mix and no majority.

My personal view for my kids (Chose to ignore if not of same opinion) - I personally do not count much on rating of schools. I want my kid to be street smart, aware and well groomed than running after the scores and be part of marking based competition. More than school , I keep a close tab on my son's own interactions and activities in his class to avoid any negative influence from any of his classmates. Need be, meet the teacher. I am glad that his teacher extensively uses an App to post photos , messages etc to keep the parents in picture.

Yeah I agree with you SH that it should be a mix of everything and not just ratings, to keep it in a sweet spot.

However personally I cannot disregard to ratings aspect altogether as perhaps (and I am talking about Frasers) that is one of the very few indicators we have and unlike back home, here by and large schools are decided by the neighborhoods.

We visited a couple of houses in the Agincourt area in Scarborough to get a feel. Agincourt High School has a good rating it seems and the

2 middle schools in that area

a. Chartland
b. North Agincourt

2 High Schools in the area

a. Agincourt Collegiate
b. Delphi Alternative

All of the above seem to be having a good rating.

The intersection is Brimley & Huntingwood.

People who are familiar with Scarborough - can they please advise the goods and bads of the area ?

For me it is kind of a mix of schools and commute as I am assuming Finch subway station should be TTC bus ride away.

I am alternatively looking at some areas in Etobicoke as well. If it helps others, the best middle schools in Etobicoke are West Valley on Kingsway / Royal York and John G...Amongst the High Schools, Richview and Martingrove are very good ones.

OAKVILLE.

We visited Oakville yesterday for some open houses.

Surprised that 80% of the schools in Oakville are 7 and above there per Fraser. Wondering why?

What's there in Oakville that makes majority of the schools so good ?

OR is it that appears from the far ?

Just wondering how welcoming and homogenizing is the community to SE Asians esp with respect to schools ...

We liked this property yesterday - though not the best ... good combination of our requirement .

Any pointers to better areas in Oakville appreciated ...
