Hi. I am a Canadian citizen working in the U.S. on a TN-visa for the past more than 1 year. Recently my wife and daughter (Both Canadian citizens) left for a trip to India from U.S.A.
On their way out of Newark, NJ airport, the continental airlines boarding staff took out the I-94 out of both of their passports.
Now, as you might know the TN-visa, (or TD visa for TN-dependents is not really stamped in the Canadian passport. It is stamped on the I-94 which is stapled inside the passport).

So, in effect, my wife and daughter have no I-94 showing the TD-Visa in their passports.
Luckily, they have photocopies of the I-94 with them.

Can anyone tell me how will they re-enter the U.S.? Is there anything that I can do in advance to save some trouble at the time of her re-entry at the immigration counter?

Please please guide me.

Thanks in advance.

Absolutely nothing to worry about. They have all your information in their system, all you (or your dependents) need to do is to tell them that they are entering on a TD/TN visa. I myself have done it at least 5 times in the last 4 years.

Also, during the flight into the US, ask specifically for a white I-94 and fill it out so the immigration guys can stamp it at POE as TN/TD. Canadians will not automatically get a white (or green) I-94 unless specifically requested.

Thanks so much for replying, both of you. I was just wondering if they should ask the airlines staff for the white I-94? Does the airline provide that on request?

When I got TN officer told me that I94 for TN/TD visa is good to travel to USA, Mexico and Canada. If person travel to other countries officer will remove the I94.

So whatever airline staff did it ok, your wife/children need will need offer letter to get TD when coming back.

I have one question:
Is it possible that person with TN/TD visa first travel to Canada/Mexico than take flight for India from there to avoid I94 removal from passport?

-- Instead of going through these hassles, remove the I-94 prior to boarding the flight and present it while entering the US. I have done it in the past.

The immigration officer might ask for a copy of the TN if you do not have the "TD I-94" - it is worth carrying a copy of your spouse's TN to avoid issues while re-entering.

Yes they will. During the flight back into the US, the airlines carry the customs form and the green/white I-94s.
