I need advice and suggestion,

I have at home Rogers High speed internet (60 GB capacity) and Basic Home phone line [$34 + taxes/month) with out any contract.

after watching two to three months i reliase that we are occasionally using this Home phone line, and we do not need home phone line more. Last month we used only two times to call through Home phone. B'cos all calls normally we do through Cell phone and in day time normally i used our office line from Mon to Friday.

Still for emergency purpose its good idea to have one Home phone line at home. I came through this website freephoneline.ca http://www.freephoneline.ca/ for one time charge and than no more monthly fees. sounds good for now....;)

Anyone have an idea or expeirence about this or how it works?

Does it work with Rogers highspeed internet? or i have to pay for dry loop cable for every month? (its mentioned on website about dry loop cable - Honestly I do not know what the heck is that?? )

I have at home Uniden 6.0 model cordless phones do they work with this phone line?

Your experts advice and your expeirence will help me before cancel the Home phone with Rogers.

Thanks

If you are not familiar with ATAs then it would be best to get ATA from them. Any phone can be used since the phone is going to plug into the ATA.

The service is free apart from setup costs and not very reliable and very little technical support. If you face any technical problems, chances are that you will be asked to browse their forums for an answer.

You do not require a dry loop if you are running it over Rogers internet since it cable based internet.

You can give it a try as long as you do not treat it as your primary phone.

Analog telephone adapter that you need to connect your phone to internet since it is a VOIP based phone line. Looks like this:

My opinion, Nothing is free in this country, don't be foolled by headlines. Always follow fine prints as well. Must search for reviews and users views before accepting offer. These kind of companies exist in no time and disapears quickly. If software makes your computer running, it means your computer should be ON all the time to make or receive calls. Once you download a free software, never know how much junk will screw up your system. Beside that you may end up getting tons of adds. At the end of the day you may regreat for making decision.

If you have cell then you can survive without home phone.
Voip phones may be 50-50 reliable. Sound quality not 100% perfect as bell or rogers. Better option could be add up another cell with sharing minutes, may save you money and fulfill your need.

For voip home phone you can go for Magic Jack device which is cost you around $40 device+ $20 one year service fee. You can use computer/laptop or buy ATA would cost you $50-75 and plug directly which is better option then downloading software. (You will need internet, you can take it any where and use it if internet available)

DRY LOOP means if you have no phone or cable line active in your home but your Internet service provider (other than bell phone or Rogers Cable) uses the line to serve you for Voip phone or Internet you pay fees for using DRY LOOP. Which is around $6-8 per month may little less or more...

I'm not against of or in favor of any services but every body doen't need to learn from own expereince only. The life is short and we have to learn from other's mistakes too.

Do i needs a Dryloop for this service? I asked them and they say not required.
and they say no needs to keep your computer on all the time, but you have to put connet your cable through your router. is it true?

You can buy the ATA from the market and just get the SIP from them. SIP is the configuration file. Some telecoms charge about $50 for the SIP, but agin it's a one-time thing

As Hamrahi has suggested, alternatively you can get the Magicjack. It was recently on sale for around $30 or so (which includes the adapter and one year of service). Beyond that they charge $70 for 5 years of service
