For PIO it is free. OCI has the fees in place - also needs a new sticker in the new passport. Also, endorsement is kind of optional for PIO - you can travel with the old passport (allowed for emergency travel, but no issues for kids travel so far)

Absolutely wrong!

We had to get endorsement on PIO for my daughter - it was done last week at the CGI office.

You have to fill in a form and attach a bank draft of $20.

Regarding travel on PIO without endorsement - practically.......yes they can overlook as did for my wife who travelled earlier this month, but as far as rule is concerned, it has to be endorsed.

In fact, the page opposite the photo page on PIO is for endorsement ONLY and that allows two endorsements!

Are you talking about VFS service fee? I don't see any reference to new passport number endorsement in CGI toronto website. Below is information from Chicago consulate (I had my son's PIO card endorsed few yrs back in NY without any fees as well).

http://chicago.indianconsulate.com/PioCardInf0031406.htm

13. Endorsement of new passport number in the PIO Card

New passport number can be got endorsed in the PIO card by presenting at the counter the old and new passports and PIO card or can be mailed with a forwarding letter. There is no fee for the service. However, by mail the procedure may taken 7 to 10 days. If presented in person between 9 am to 12.30 pm, the service is rendered the same day.

In case the holder cannot spare time to get the endorsement done in the PIO card, due to urgent travel, he/she carry both, the new and the old passport, alongwith PIO card for smooth check in/out at immigration points.

That is exactly what I had in mind - no fee - after reading the chicago website (link was provided to me through CD by someone). I had also sent an e-mail to CGI and some Mr Tirath Singh replied - "come to the consulate, we will do it"

My daughter was shocked when she was asked to get a money order for $20.

And yes, this was done at CGI Toronto office, not at VFS

Hi
Before going to CGI with all the documents and application form, just confirmed with the helpline that applications are being accepted in the main CGI office, although their automated response service keeps on saying that its the VFS office that does it. Pathetic!!
Is there a lot of rush, since application submission time is only between 9-11 AM on weekdays?
Feedbacks please.

Regards

Hi Sumjo,

Can you confirm whether CGI Toronto is still asking for a $20 money order to endorse a new passport for PIO?

OCI renewal is a complete process just like OCI and you will have submit documents mentioned on their website and passport and will take at least 2-3 months for renewal. Now of course you have to pay VFS fee on top that $25 you mentioned.

Is a new OCI visa sticker on a renewed Cdn passport an absolute requirement or offered for "convenience"? In other words, can one not show the sticker on the expired passport along with the new passport? After all, OCI is permanent or lifelong and doesn't expire.

There is a specific language on their website cgitoronto.ca regarding OCI's renewal. There is no such thing stated on the website for PIO card but may be they are treating it as "Miscellaneous Service- Additional Endorsement" and charging $20.
------------------------------
I. In case of issuance of new foreign passport
OCI registration certificate and 'U' visa sticker carry the passport number of the registered OCI. Accordingly, each time a new passport is issued to an OCI holder; it has to be captured on the registration certificate and visa. This would require re-issuance of OCI registration certificate and visa each time a new foreign passport is issued in the following cases.
Up to the completion of 20 years of age, OCI documents have to be re-issued each time a new passport is issued to the holder.
Between 21-50 years of age, there is no need to seek re-issuance of OCI documents each time a new passport is issued. However, if the applicant desires, he/she may avail the service for re-issuance of OCI documents.
After the completion of 50 years of age, OCI documents have to be re-issued once after issuance of a new passport

According to VFS, applications for PIO are accepted at CGI office now. But it is not mentioned on CGI website what time of the day they accept PIO applications? My home is far from CGI office and I want to go fully prepared for my child's PIO application as I can not afford to make two or more trips. Any CD here who has recently applied for PIO at CGI tell me regarding the following:

1. Do I still need two bank drafts, one for CGI ($240) and one for VFS ($21)?
2. What time of the day they accept applications?
3. Do they keep original documents or return them?
4. After PIO approval, do they send passport to VFS or directly to applicant via post?
