I completed my landing and returned to India last week. I may be going to Canada (probably permanently) in April. Since I don't have a PR card, I will be applying for a travel document. How long is a travel document valid? What questions can I expect to be asked?

It generally takes about three weeks to a month to GET it.

The validity will be marked on it. Please see the dates after you receive it.

Since there are pressures on the booking during peak travel, I feel it should be valid for at least two months.

Freddie.

Thanks for your response Freddie.

The application form for a travel document asks for a "permanent address in canada". I don't have one yet. Can I just say so or is it mandatory to give some address?

If you know where you are going to stay, then provide them the address etc.,
If you know where you stayed before and have the details, please submit the same to them. That way when you return back you can go there and tell them that they will be getting a few letters to that address from CIC, for you and you will drop in and pick them up when they arrive. Give people where you stayed last, a Phone number to get in touch with, once you settle down and really have a phone number.

In fact, you should make arrangements to get into a place, when you land here. that will make your life a little easier on the day of landing. You can do that from India or any where. Tell them you will pay after you get in. Inform them if you have any change of plans so that they don't charge you for non usage.

Freddie.

The TDocument validity depends on your itinerary, when you apply for TD mention the dates of travel, they normally give TD validity according to your dates. Please note that its normally a week above, for e.g you are to arrive in Canada on 19th May the TD will expire on 27th or 29th May. They decide the dates according to your itinerary so please don't mention any dates just like that, take a quote from travel agent, reserve (don't buy the ticket, buy it after the TD is issued) and state the dates in your application.

I've applied twice for TD for our family and both the times it was according to our itinerary.

Hope it helps.

Jona

Here is my update:

I applied at the VFS office, Bangalore. After a week, I collected my passport from the same office. Happily, my travel document stamped has a validity of 6 months!
