I am planning to buy new laptop for backhome. Which is best place to buy,
- Future Shop
- Best Buy
- Staples
My requirement are DELL/TOSHIBA
- Intel Core 2 Due process
- 2-3 GB RAM
- 200/250 GB HD
- 15.4" LCD
- Built-in Web Cam, speakers
- DVD player
Any idea, what will be the best price for this type of spec. Can I carry this laptop in plane.
- Are airlines allowing to carry laptop in hand carry bag?
- Is this good idea to buy laptop from Canada for backhome. (I will use here for couple of month befor moving to backhome, warrenty shouldn't be issue)

Hi,
Of the places that you have mentioned Best Buy is the best bet. I am in the market to buy a new laptop and I have found no better price than at Best Buy.
with a 2 GB model, you are looking at $499- $549 + taxes at Best Buy
With a 3GB model, you are looking at $599 + taxes at best buy.
Buying in USA best buy can shave you off $50 + they have just 10% tax on the state of NY.
I had this conversation with Rajan D of CD who is now doing sales of computers in India and he told me that the price of laptops in India is around Rs. 45-50K (for the confiuration that you mentioned). He told me that in India, HP, and Compaq are the best models. Second is ACER (a Cheapie here - $400), third is a local model and 4 th is a Dell. He also told me that Sony has a niche market.
Search Best buy website for deals.
Airlines allow you to carry the laptop inside the plane as part of hand luggage as well as customs in India allow one per adult tax-free.

I vote for Staples . An associate told me that when a lot (20-30) is ending (2-3 pieces left) Staples anounces a promotion on that model (and I believe the others also) - thats the best time to buy the model and it keeps on coming every 1-2 months . I would recommend HP / Compaq though I have had no issues with my Acer brought at Staples online .

If you are buying a DELL, buy it directly from dell.ca, do not buy from any other distributor (like Costco etc.). I haven't seen Dell at futureshop, bestbuy or staples, but even if you do, don't buy from there. Dell.ca will give you the best price.
The config. that you are looking for will cost something between 450 - 499.
The Dell PC I bought from Dell.ca was selling for much more at Costco - I really don't understand why; even though Costco is supposed to be giving best prices.
