I REACHED CANADA ON 16TH MARCH,2002 AND LEFT ON 18TH MAY,2004, AND AM STILL IN INDIA, ACCORDING TO RULES I NEED TO BE 730DAYS IN 5-YR TERM IN CANADA; I want to know now when do i start counting this 5yr period ie from the day of landing in canada i.e on 16th march, 2002 or the day i got my visa in india which was 2001

You need to count from the date you landed.
So, in your case, you landed on 16th March 2002.
Add 5 years to that and that gives you 2007.
During this period, you must spend 2 years inside Canada.
You have already spent a little over 2 years, so you are ok for now.
