What kind of Battery booster cable is good for vehicle jump start?
I searched on net and there are Surge Protection cables available http://www.canadiantire.ca/browse/product_detail.jsp?FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=1408474396672455&bmUID=1198176791516&PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524443271220&assortment=primary&fromSearch=true
Some normal cables are also available around $20. Which one is recommended? If you can share your experience it'll be very helpful.
Is it harmful in anyways to use our vehicle to jump start others?
Thanks in adv.

Hello,
Length of Cable needed depends upon the length of the vehicle that might need a boost and the positioning of the vehicle that provides the boost. 20 feet will suffice for most of our needs, even if positioned behind the long truck or alongside a van.
Gauge of cable : #4 is preferable. Will take half a dozen tries or more, lasting fifteen to twenty seconds each with a break of 30 seconds or less, before getting unduly heated. (Higher the gauge number the thinner the wires)
Material : Copper or copper strands. Copper is not that flexible after a few years use. (Aluminum ones are dirt cheap.) Copper wires get a little stiffer after a few years of use or non use. Copper strands are the order of the day.
Weight is about 12-13 lbs. -6 Kgs.
Surge protection is an added feature. Might be slightly higher in cost.
Look for good insulated grip on the clamp. Also fastening of the cable to the grip. Solid copper jaws are the best. (Cerated)
Also look for a pouch to store. OR look for a winter kit.
Providing a boost to some one else's vehicle needs looking into. Read the Owner's Manuals prior to attempting. Generally one provides out of courtesy. Some will refuse due to the existence of the electronic components and parts on their vehicle. You respect their views under those circumstances. One MUST know the procedure, otherwise do not attempt to provide or receive.

One who receives a boost generally has maintained their batteries and its terminals badly. They will need to be cleaned and coated with petroleum jelly. Batteries may need Charging or topping up. Some cells run dry, will call for adding of distilled water.
As a rule of thumb, generally, a good battery will last five to six years. Costs about $85.00, installed. They test the circuits at that time.
Cables, Standard price:- But cheaper during the winter season, or on specials and clearance.
