Whenver I see video (songs) on smashhits.com, some videos work, some dont with a popup that says need upgrade. I dont understand. How come some video works, some dont. Any suggestion?

You are facing this problem as Real Player does not support all kinds of codecs and media formats.
so download and install the K-lite Codec pack and which takes care of all your codec issues.

I have it and no problems with any formats/codecs so far.

I am having similar problem when i am playing live channel (ex:TV9).
The real player openup the window..but gives me some unknown error...
but the recorded channel's are displaying in the real player..
i tried to find the answers in teh "Real Networks"...not lucky
any idea/suggestions

better use VLC media player...which plays any kind of video and audio ..

klite codec will configure media player classic or windows media player.
windows media player is a crap with no extra features and media player classic will stuck up sometimes and u have to kill the process in task manager ...

I AGREE on this, as I have the K-lite Codec pack installed, and I am using Windows media player 11 as my default player - it does install media player classic, but you can always override the options.
I have also configured various other players for different formats
like I use DivX player for AVIs and Div X formats,
Nero Show time for MP4
REal Player for all real type formats
VLC /SopCast /TVUPlayer etc I use for live streams
and rest everything using Windows Media Player.
Absolutely no issues with anything so far.
Note: Some of the Players I have licensed like Nero/DiVx , rest are free ofcourse.
So installing the K-lite Codec pack actually resolves most of the format playback issues.
