Hi Friends

Please offer / guide.

There is no pleasure in having nothing to do; The fun is in having lots to do and not doing it.
Check our classifieds. Also, for the range you're willing to pay, its going to be pretty tough to find a car you can call "reliable" (per the dictionary definition of the word). It is going to be a bit of a gamble in that range.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Are you there?
BL
What should be the range for a reliable car?
Help me create a realistic budget.

Hi Indian,
You buy a car suitable to your status, needs and your budget. You can improve upon the reliablity and the performance if you spend an additional $1000. (See all of the expenses you will incur in five years) The items mentioned here are for your guidance and are the minimum. You can always exceed them to suit your taste. Buy a car that will give you 40 - 50 kms/ gal
or atleast 10 - 12 km/liter. or 8/10 per 100k HWY rating. JAPS are GOOD. The others take a back seat. Please take your time and explore the sites. Make notes as you go along.

Most of us normally drive 12,000 - 15,000 kms per year. Others drive 25,000 - 35,000 kms per year(High milage).
Once every four years, on an average, we buy all four tires ($500). Once in five, we buy a brand new battery.($100) Once every three or four years, we do the mufflers and the pipes $250<. as found necessary. Once an year or two, we do the tune ups if high end parts are used.($250){ Spark plugs, wires, sensors if needed, fuel filter, air filter etc.,} At that time change the fuel filters.($40) Oil & filter once every four or six months ($25-30). Wiper blades when needed. ($10ea) Power Steering is normally O.K. Just top it up. Brakes every two years for the FRONT. Three years for the reat. $100ea
Transmission oil and tune up ($100)( Tricky tricky, none of the latest cars permit a total oil change or a filter renewal, unlessthey are totally dismantled. So all of these cars with automatic transmissions are suspect, so buy a used car waranty with $500 + for an year)
Dealers will not provide you with damage and accident histories, DMV does not demand or provide you with one if purchased through a dealer. Always ask for a clean bill of sale, see that the vehicle is pristine clear. (No lien, not salvaged, not stolen) Make sure it is emission tested. (Which is anyway)
TAKE a full week and research. See also Auto Trader, http://www.autotrader.ca/default.aspx Always take the vehicle for a TEST DRIVE, a short 30k distance.Make sure the AC and the HEATER, is working. Check the RW defrost. Brakes are OK. Mirrors adjust from inside.
If it has any high end accessories check them too. Such as cruise control Radio CD etc.,.. Kick the tires too that completes the sfety check.
Please note that any car that has to run at 6000-7000 revs at 110 kms will only last six or seven YEARS. (200,000 klicks) After that it is ripe for razor blades. They are called klunkers. (Read the specs for them on the web)
Also make a deal with an auto mechanic 'to safety check' any vehicle that you intend to buy for a fixed price.(a deal) If he will e test the vehicle too, it will be a better deal. He is YOUR mechanic. All these are good maintainance and buying practices and washing once or twice during the winter will keep the rust away, it is a must. Get a drip free oil coating for $45-60 at the least once in two years, once a year is preferable. Shine it once or twice during the SUMMER. buy a portable vac to clean the insides as you find it necessary.
Never drive over the posted speed limit. keep a safe distance or stay in the middle lane "ALWAYS". .... Watch out for the other guy..... IT PAYS.
Watch the mirrors and Safe driving,
Freddie.
Hi Indian,
I remember you talked about appearing in a driving test a little while ago. Have you passed the test? Please let me know as I am in the same boat as you are. My driving test is scheduled in October. I will also be buying a car (preferably used) once I pass the test. So, if you could get in touch then we will have a good information with us.
I have also sent you a PM. Please check your mailbox.
Thanks and a good luck.
