PR Card renewal

Is it mandatory to renew PR card immediately after the expiry date?
I plan to return Canada and I am aware that I am short of 45 days to fullfil 730 days in 5 years rule.
If I am allowed to enter with out any questions from Immigration officer at the port of entry, what will happen when I try to renew my PR card?
Can I wait for few months to accumulate 730 days and renew my card later?
Please clarify.

It will be in your best interest to wait for a few months to accumulate 730 days and renew the card later. (If allowed to enter with out any questions from Immigration officer at the port of entry)
