This is what I know about the Gadar movement. Gadar means mutiny, and the movement is a dark reminder of British oppression and is at the same time a powerful symbol of those few East Indian intellectuals living overseas who would go to great lengths to free their country of that oppression by creating public awareness of British hypocrisy and tyranny. They worked very hard to rid India first of psychological domination (dependency of Western commodities, the whole while undermining their own culture) then physical oppression, as many felt the later attempt was futile without the former.

For more insight on the Gadar movement I will ask an acquaintance (who completed her dissertation on the Gadar movement) to contribute to this thread.

I have spoken out on many occasions, both in the parliament and outside it, about the inhumane treatment meted out to asylum seekers in refugee detention centres.

My most recent speech was on 3 March 2004, in opposition to the Migration Amendment (Duration of Detention) Bill, when I referred specifically to the case of Muhammad Qasim in Baxter detention centre among other matters.
