Partly right. Yes, we (as well as immigrants from other countries) will shape this country, as it will shape us. That is what multi-culturalism is all about.

Ever wondered why in Canada we have immigrants who are members of Parliament, Cabinet Ministers, Provincial MPs, city councillors, Premiers and Judges but this is not true in the USA?
My opinion is that because Canada encourages each community to develop by themselves and also at the same time be part of Canadian Mosaic and that we have grownup with the confidence to take part in the Greater Governing of the Country. Recently we saw in Ontario's Municipal Election many, many immigrants from minority taking part as candidates... this is good.
I'd like to hear what others think of this my thoughts and views

Well Kanjis it is not true ...... US also has many immigrants in important positions ..... I can remeber two immigrant children who went on to be Sect. of State .... Madeline Albright & Colin Powell .... even though Colin Powell was born in US, his parent came from Jamaica, while as MA was born in Prague.

This raises a question of \"Who is a Canadian \"?. I had the opportunity of overhearing a few Desi kids I think might be in 6 or 7 grade discuss about their school and they were mentioning that the Canadian guy in the class was the prankster. I've heard many a times similar discussion where you would find that they are mentioning the Canadian guy is a white guy. The reason is that the kids look at themselves as Indian, Pakistani, Sri Lankan, Lebanese more than they identify themselves as Canadians. I see this trend with children who have immigrated at 5 or 6 grades more than the ones who start out here in KG level.
I was watching a program on CBS, where they had interviewed many people who are white, suddenly are discovering their meti routes and trying to find their anscestry. I was interesting to hear when one guy who was brownish, discussed his school days when the teacher had asked him who he was he had responded that he was a Canadian, to the teacher got furious and responded that you cannot be a Canadian and you need to be either an Italian, Polish, Russian, Native Indian or some one else.
If multiculturism promotes you to be who you are then, when will we become Canadian ?. In Holland(Netherlands) all new immigrants are given a quiz and also asked to watch a video on the Dutch Culture before immigrating. The reason is that you either blend in or you stick out.
The US experience of the melting pot is a failure. It is more a soup where the individual components of the soup stick out then to have a singular taste. If you visit Los Angeles you will understand how divided the city exists. You have the rich whites in Hollywood, Bel Aire, Santa Monica and surrounding areas, while you have the blacks living in Watts and surrounding areas, while the Chinese have their own China town, while Desis are concentrated in Artesia and City of Industry. There is a clear cut demarkation. The problem has started that the Spanish are entering in all these above said areas in great numbers and hence they are a problem to all.
Canada needs to address this issue of multiculturism and how far it is willing to take it. The liberals are leading in polls today at 33%, while the Conservatives are at 31% and NDP at 15%. It is time the liberals define/redefine multiculturism.

Speech by Thomas Friedman of The New York Times....
"When we were young kids growing up in America, we were told to eat our
vegetables at dinner and not leave them. Mothers said, 'think of the
starving children in India and finish the dinner.' And now I tell my
children: 'Finish your maths homework. Think of the children in India
who would make you starve, if you don't.'"
Multiculturalism is good idea but there is thin line bringing own country/culture good values and bad values. One of the reasons we move here consciously or unconsciously in our mind is that we don’t like lot of things in our home country. Those things can not be removed by good job/salary/degrees. They are deep in society/culture.
Lot of people never throws out those bad things here and never tries to learn what is good in society here. A big population of immigrants are very much ready to critic white people society and always try to bring own good culture in meetings like doing marketing.
But in States things are different for Indians in some level. A big population of educated, rich, well doing immigrant Indians and well doing next generation in schools/universities. Mostly they can well gel with americans when they are out. That is different thing that at home they eat rice with hand and wearing lungi all time.
