AACHEN: This Friday could be a day of horror for superstitious people who dread the number 13, says a German professor: not only will the date be Friday the 13th, but all the digits in the numeric notation of the date add up to 13 as well. Whichever way round the date is written - 13-10-2006 or 2006-10-13 - the total comes out to 13, a number regarded as “unlucky” by people in the west who believe in divination by numerology. Heinrich Hemme, who teaches physics at the prestigious technical University of Aachen and is not superstitious, discovered the coincidence while playing with numbers.
He said yesterday the last time 13 coincided this way was Friday, January 13, 1520. More horrors are in store: May 13, 2011 will also be a double-13 Friday. “It’s pure chance,” said Hemme. What is more, Hemme established that 2006 is the first year since 1411 where Friday the 13th occurs twice. January 13, 2006 was a Friday. In Germany, where Hemme works, surveys show one quarter of people worry that unpleasant things will happen on a Friday the 13th. - DPA

Nice one for superstitious people.
People in Canada do belive in the superstition of 13.
A leading housing company that i work with never offers 13 in the building number or the area (ie. no area add up to 13).
I also remember a story told to me by my friend while he was taking his G2 licence. Four people were taken to Kingston by the driving instructor on a friday the 13th. The examiner, during the begining of the drive, began to tell the unluckyness of the day (esp. that being friday the 13th). The examiner told them that if he had known this before he would have ended up taking the day off. He ended up failing all the 4 of them. The driving instructor ended up pocketing about a grand in his pocket ($250 X 4 nos.)

It's not that the housing company is superstitious. It is because there may not be enough buyers for a property with 13 number.
Just like in India every one designs houses based on vastu whether you believe in it or not because you may not get good price for the house/apartment when you sell it.
