Since the time I joined and became a regular member of CD, there are somethings that never change.

Any topic that you post in the "life" section, most of the time, end up being India v/s Canada tussle. The repliers sometimes change, sometimes not - but the essence of the arguments remain the same.

Agreed that you are a newcomer to Canada, frustrated with the life here. But why to make a habit of moaning, each and everytime somebody posts a pro-Canada message? There has to be a life in Canada beyond badmouthing the country.

All that extracts out of the postings is that Canada = no jobs + sex + evil influence on children + erosion of Indian culture.

Agreed that catharsis is a good way of dealing with your frustration, but why make a habit out of it? A squeaky wheel does not get a grease always, sometimes it has to be replaced.

Change can be intimidating to anybody. If any person of Canadian origin decides to immigrate to India, he/she can be put into same hostile situation, as a new comer finds himself/herself in Canada.

IMHO, the purpose of this board is to help a propective immigrant make the right decision, not to dissuade him/her from his/her decision to immigrate to Canada.

Variety is a reality of life. India is not equal to Canada, Canada is not equal to India. So IMHO, it would be folly to use one country as a yardstick to measure another country situated on the opposite site of globe.

Living in India has its own advantages and disadvantages, Living in Canada has its own advantages and disadvantages. So it depends upon you whether you prefer a glass half filled with Thumsup or Coke.

Canada can never provide you the joy of celebrating Navratri or Diwali, the proximity to your dear ones or cheap subsidized higher education, India cannot provide you the freedom of thoughts and action, (unless you are really brave), free medicare and equality (equality meaning the difference between rich and poor is very less pronounced here).

But then both the countries have a very stable democratic political system. Nor do you face the danger of political turmoils now and then. Your freedom is not restricted by some dicatotor or a facist government. Both countries provide you with the opportunity to grow.

So for once, instead of moving in circles, why don't we break a habit and try moving forward?

Hi Meghal,

Can I disagree with your first statement that Canada cannot provide you the 'joy' of celebrating Navratri or Diwali. Granted it will not be celebrated the same way that you would celebrate in India, however as you mentioned its how one looks at it. Culture itself evolves over time and place. What has developed here is an "indo canadian" culture where one has the choice to express their traditions and beliefs the way that they see fit (in theory).

You can light candles, do puja, fireworks etc while you are in Canada. You can go to the mandir etc. IMO, Diwali (for ex) doesnt lose its specialness.

Can you tell me how India "cannot provide you the freedom of thoughts and action". and at the same time "provides you with an opportunity to grow". I am not disagreeing about India's merits, however I would like to know what restrictions you do face or feel you face in India?

Thanks,

In India freedom of expression is limited and governed by religious considerations. For example The Satanic Verses by Salman Rushdie is banned in India but you can get it easily in Canada. In India the government imposes its decision based on vote bank considerations. The routes to take out religious processions are also based on whether it might affect the religious sentiments of the “other” community and the government goes out of its way to appease the “other” community by banning books or news which might be offending to them.

Nikhil,

Nice post. Agree with you 100%.

No wonder we are still lagging behind as compared to Malaysia, Singapore, etc. Just by having mobiles or writing codes for foreign firms does not change things.

Thanks DIO.

I am not highlighting issues about religion but regions too. I have read that in the early 70’s the Shiv Sena wanted the south Indian’s out of Mumbai and they had a war cry” Bagao Lungi Bajao Pungi”, roughly translated it means “ Kick out the lungi or south Indian and blow the trumpet”. Talk about being united as a nation.

Even today in Mumbai people refer to outsiders as “Madrasi, Bhaiyya or Gujju’s” and to people of certain faith as “paowalla’s or bread eaters”. And then the same folks come to Canada and call the Canadian’s racist.

Desi's who talk about the evils in Canada (sex, drugs etc) should realise that all these evils ahve entered the India society due to lots of cash with the new BPO generation. So if they think of going to India to escape the evils of Canada then read this story.

A certain merchant in Baghdad sent his servant to the market to buy some provisions. A little while later, the servant returned looking white in the face. In a trembling voice he said, “Just now in the market place I was jostled by a man in the crowd, and when I turned I saw it was Mr. Death. He looked at me and made a threatening gesture. Please lend me your horse, because I want to go to Samara where Mr. Death will not be able to find me.”

The merchant agreed and lent the scared man his horse. The servant mounted the horse and rode away as fast as the animal could gallop. Later that day, the merchant went down to the market place and saw Mr. Death standing in the crowd. He approached him and said, “Why did you make a threatening gesture to my servant when you saw him this morning?”

“That was not a threatening gesture,” said Mr. Death. “It was only a start of surprise. I was astonished to see him in Baghdad, because I have an appointment with him tonight in Samara.”

Nice one Loser.

I can understand any parents concern about drugs but why be strict about sex? When a teenager biologically matures into an adult it’s just a growing phase in life brought about by the hormonal changes in the body. So why should parents stifle this curiosity which every growing adult encounters? A more practical approach would be to make kids aware of the dangers of sexually transmitted diseases and the problem of unwanted pregnancy. Virginity is no longer a virtue and it’s meaningless to control the effects of testosterones in males. Why loose the enjoyment and fun which others in your age group can have just because your parents object to it. Sex is no sin, only a natural desire and all humans should enjoy it.
