Hi,

Think well before taking decision. If you are undecided, after getting visa, take 2 months or few weeks holiday and come here and look yourself. Come alone to get the first hand idea.

I had shifted countries 3 times and now feel that settling in Canada is one of the most difficult. Here nobody recognise your education & experience from India or other developing countries. Some CDs will dis-agree, I know, who might have been lucky and got jobs, but majority find it difficult to settle. Also, if you want to come, you must be prepared to do anything (literally means anything) here (which is an issue with Indians, whether they accept it or not).

There are many-many people going back and even given a chance to go back to their old jobs, many will be ready to go back immediately. But many people don't go back, as if you are here for 2-3 years, it's not easy to get in your field in India also after few years gap (This is my first hand experience, when earlier in my life, I had decided to go back to India)

So, take your decision after a good thought. I usually suggest people, if you are doing well in India, don't come here, but if you are struggling there, then come here. Also, don't think about the $$$, as it's not the same as people in India think. In practical sense, $ 1 = Rs. 10

Dear CDs,

I am curious to know if it is worth to immigrate at 40+ age.

We have a lot of understanding from this forum about life in Canada, still in early middle age is it worth the risk of relocation?

We both (H/W) are working and settled (non-technical background).

Our daughter is in 8th std in DPS.

People say we should take a call and go for it, for the betterment of our child's future (in terms of education and better life overall).

I applied in 2003, and am a member of this forum for a long time, when it had only 6500 odd members.

So I have gone through a lot of posts, but nothing has caught my atention which is age specific.

Will remain obliged for your comments / views.

Thanks in anticipation.

FYI , DPS gives long leave to students whose parents
are transferred to other states , countries etc- but they take
full fees for the entire period.

I know several people who have gone to Australia etc -
they pay fee for the long leave period so that their
child can come back and join the same school (in case
they have to ).

DPS has over 100 schools in India maybe more, in delhi and noida itself they have 10 schools,so its not like getting into IIT or IIM,

education wise i think india is much better then Canada or US for that matter, yes grad school and masters in us/can has its own advatanges, If one can aim for IIT/IIM in india then why look beyond

I am aged 45 + landed in Canada exactly a year ago. I would like to give an actual picture to the possible extent to the prospective immigrants. Please prepare for the following.

1. There are no jobs for any immigrants in this country expect labor jobs unless you are from the IT field. Even for the labor jobs some times you will disqualify if your communication skills are not good enough for that. Canada like UK, as I was told in my school days, is very developed where even the drivers speak good English.

2. None of your qualifications are accepted here by the job market. Even if you are from IIT, I doubt you have any good future.

3. Whether you are a doctor, engineer, clerk, matriculate, non matriculate all is the same. All your past is past, only useful to obtain a new degrees if you get admission into a college. Again don’t expect you will get admission into any University.

4. All have to start afresh .you need to go to school to obtain a diploma which will enable you to get an entry level job.
5. There may be one in one thousand who got a job in their line with out Canadian degree or diploma that is the luckiest in the world. Again there is no guarantee they will get another job if they loose the present job.
6. Two incomes are necessary. Your wife has to work and fit to do a labor job. If both are 40+ you will see the hell on the earth.

7. Though the employers are not supposed to discriminate you in terms of your age, there is a possibility you will not get employment after 50.Official statistics say jobs for 45+ immigrants are less in jobs.

8. Your children may be down graded a year or two in the school even before admission for various reasons.

9. Professional standards are very high. General knowledge of the local people is very high. So even if you are a postgraduate you look small in front of the Canadian high school boy.
10. Obtaining a driving license is like a graduation course. Will take two years.
11. You and your family need a positive frame of mind and fighting spirit to come over all the difficulties. You must able to support each other.

12. You need a car in the winter .So you need a driving license before or just after coming here and money to buy a car. Your chances of getting jobs increase with your own transportation.
13. If your wife never worked before and you were the sole bred winner in the past, things may reverse here. You may look down yourself because your wife may get better opportunity than you.
14. Your children may not obey you or may think you are not that great as they thought in the past due to your present labor job. Same may be with your wife.

15. Don’t expect your brother or sister, if they are here before your landing, help you. They have their problems in earning dollars / survival
16. Before I came here I went to gym to get good shape and prepared ultimately for any labor job.
17. Canada is a rich country on paper but in reality is satellite of USA. It is a small market, for any thing. All its wealth, to my understanding, must be more useful to USA for its own purpose.
18. sagdwqesyrfewtberb.................

Please note that I have nothing against Canada. Canada is different from India. Both are good in their own way .I am fully contented and happy here now as i was earlier in five other countries before comming here., and had expected all the problems before landing here. I fully understand and support that Canada is for Canadians. Reality is, Immigrants are not Canadians, but are those came here for mutual benefit in long run. Sooner they integrate they benefit. Improving your qualifications is one such thing towards that process.

Rajuu,
Very good analysis. I bow down my head to you and i pray that God will help you to secure a very good job in your line and that too in Canada.
All the best and donot give up. Please keep on knowing/ learning about the canadian system. Even an ant in Canada will be able to teach you a lesson for survival here.
TK
Sidenote : And Rajuu, have you been ever positive in Canada? If only you would have been positive in your views and had tried to assimilate with the local population and local customs, Stephen harper would have surely given you a 100K per your job in which you would have required you to just walk into a particular office and your job might have been just to sign some papers everyday. I think that b'cos you were so negetive about that fact that you are over 45 that it did not get you a job. And rajuu , if you thought that my sidenote was true, you are mistaken. It was sarcasm about the Canadian work culture. No matter, how you assimilate into a culture and are positive as long you are not milk white and your resume shows an Indian qualification, you still maynot get a job (unless you are an IT person, of course. For IT people , a different set of rules are in Vouge in Canada and they would not fit into the particular situations as mentioned above).

There are plenty of survival jobs. Survival is not a problem because of dignity of labour. SUCCESS is definitely a challenge for 40+ people. Again, what is success to some one may not be for another. Settling is any where 2 to 5 year’s process.

I liked the education for children. Many 40+s return after initial landing and admitting joining their children in Universities because of the low tuition fee for locals and PR.

If one can afford, it is good to see him/herself before taking a final decision.

All my family memebers are more than happy though we are working hard.

Dear Mr.Rajuu,

Yours is the ultimate word as you have seen it all. But I do understand that there are a number of those who have got jobs as Data entry operators and call centre professionals. Does it mean that these jobs are not available to all? Please let me have your opinion.
