it could be that either your software is not up-to-date with the latest updates and/or you are regularly visiting sites that somehow manage to bypass the installed firewall/anti-virus software.

I regularly visit canadiandesi.com:D

No, seriously, I'd like to thank everyone for the quick response and ideas.

I have used hijack this with limited success. My DSL provides me with a firewall. Maybe that is not sufficient ? I tried Yahoo pop up blocker...didn't work.

The latest thing that got into my computer was the freepod.com and every time I opened a website, a new window would come up saying freepod is loading and then would jump over to bunch of junk websites.

But, I will certainly try all of your advices and hope for the best.

Thanks everyone. I appreciate your help.

well i have done a PHD in this, i am kidding, i mean my pc was spammed and hacked so many times that i eventually did everything-altho being a SW person , yet i had to crawl on he message boards to get the right advice

Follow this and it should help :

1)Download zone alarm : freeware, this is a firewall
2)download microsoft antispyware :freeware
3)ad-aware from lavasoft : freeware (although i have seen that this doesnt always work but its a good option)
4)AVG anitvirus : this is like mcafee , freeware,

Scan ur pc and after scan and fixes, always reboot ur pc

Create a user on ur pc : dont always log as admin, that would be helpful to you

Hijackthis is the option when u want to identify un-identified processes running on your pc

This looks like a lot, but trust me its all simple
post back if u still encounter problems

Thanks again

Give me a couple days and I'll try all the above options and then see how it works.

My experience has been that the more "stuff" you install on your computer, the worse it is going to get.

So all these zonealarms, firealarms, popup blockers, antispyware, anti this ware, that ware are simply not able to keep up with the latest techniques that the bad guys use to highjack your computer.

You need to identify the source from there these things are coming, and then block them at the source.

If they are coming via the Internet browser, then modify the security settings of the browser to prevent these things from installing.
Use zone-based security to enable the good sites to install stuff, and prevent the bad sites from installing anything.

On your firewall, use DNS or IP address blocking to completely lock-out certain sites that put all this garbage on your machine.

If the source of all this is game CDs, music CDs, etc. then you have to address that accordingly.

I would repeat. Install yahoo pop-up blocker & anti-spy...any click that pops-up is blocked and if you want to accept....browser will ask you to click on active x....and exception to rule will be formed for that instance only....it takes care of all the pop-ups.....For antivirus.....install avg-antivirus free version....that will take care of all the latest definition of viruses....I agree with Pratickm....the more you install leads to bigger confusion of settings.......somehow internet connection finally gets blocked....also it is very difficult to remove some of the anti-spy program from computer...they just sit and keep blocking access to your system.....Yahoo and AVG are trusted site....try them....
