How much custom duty in india on electronics

Hello All,
My parents are going back to india soon.
I want to give them a laptop , any suggestion on duty on it , electronics and the limit , how much we can carry to Inida?.

Bringing a laptop into India will not be an issue. I know of someone who did that recently from the US. The entire fasmily were US citizens and visiting just for a month

I am surethat there is no custom duty for Laptop in India, if you are taking it with you.

But you are asking for some other country Inida !!??

Yup, no problems with bringing a laptop. I have a copy of the latest customs duties handbook.

Just warn your parents not to get scammed by some customs guys who might say laptops attract duty.

Nowadays there is virtually no duty on anything. As a result the customs guys earnings have dropped. so they try to scam a person if he is not aware. They tried to do it to me for a video camera.

i just told them to keep it in custody till i return.

finally he let em go.

How about a DVD player ? No duty ?

Why would anyone want to take a DVD Player to India?

Plenty of good brands/models under US$100 (with one year warranty) are available in India.

However if you are bringing in only a DVD player, no problems.

Broadly, if you are not into smuggling, and everything fits into your baggage, normally they do not bother you.
