Silicon Valley jobs

About half of the jobs being outsourced by Silicon Valley companies are going to India, according to a survey released.

More than 53 per cent of Silicon Valley companies surveyed this month reported that they outsource a portion, or all, of their operations, according to the survey by Santa Clara University.

Still?

I thought this was tapering off.

Even with all the issues (infrastructure), they are still going to India?

Why? Why not China?

Good for India , though.

Tapering off?
Huh? its just going to increase - I saw a recent Fortune survey whioch said over 75% of Fortune 500 companies either outsource to India or are hiring people for their Indian operations.

Infrastructure?
Its getting better and improving by leaps and bounds. Have you called a toll free support number and spoken with someone in India recently? The line is so good its almost like you are calling locally - and the call center people now have good English too!

Its good for India - but not so good for Indians who have made a home in North America. I was speaking with a senior IT consultant who spent 7 years in the US - he said for 7 years he struggled to get a Green card so he could then demand high rates. Now he has a Green Card but the jobs are disappearing! He is still employed but he fears for the stability of common IT developer-type positions. He said - only half in jest - that maybe his teenage son will migrate back to India in search of better jobs!

It hasnt affected us much here in Canada - primarily because Canadian IT market is much smaller than the US. But it will. A lot of Canadian firms who used to develop software for US companies (nearshore as opposed to offshore) are finding they are losing business to Indian firms. Also companies including Telus (among others) are sending call center jobs as the first wave of outsourcing - in time other jobs will follow.

TRUE!!!! Company I work for bid for a big project in US. They quoted 105 CAD / hour for T&M. TCS got the project. You know what the rate was?? USD 15 / hr.

In IT it is better to switch job form Development/Programming to Support. The Support jobs are not going to wipe of quite soon.

Infosys the number two information technology company in India hired around 8,000 employees in the last quarter. Their total employee strength is around 48,000. Sales revenue for Infosys has already touched 1 billion dollars this half year. These figures are awesome and show that India is now a software powerhouse notwithstanding the infrastructural bottlenecks. Just imagine what happens when knowledge process outsourcing starts moving to India.

You can go on for a hundred years about how well India is doing in this field, but let us not forget that it is all about money. If a Corporation in North America is going to pay $ 15 instead of the $ 80 that it would otherwise pay here, why won't the projects go to India.

Mera Bharat Mahaan - no doubt, but have you ever wondered how it hurting the economy, the jobs and the psyche of the educated, skilled and talented desi software guy, here?
