Good topic,
I am a Biomedical Engineer. I got my first job in my line after 10 months of landing in Canada. I did not do any certification so far. And last week my services were terminated because of downsizing. I worked for exactly 5 months. This job gave me the most needed CANADIAN EXPERIENCE and hope to get another job in my field soon.

At first I want to thank DIO for starting this thread and Azaf for giving very pertinent replies.

I am an Electrical Engg. from Indian Univ. and have 6 years of exp. in IT field. Out of 6 I have worked in Japan for 3 and half years and I speak Japanese fluently. Its very easy for me to get a job and work in Japan.

But after getting PR, I am wondering if I come to Canada and they ask me my Canadian experience, I have nothing to show.

I also thought about getting education. Would getting education enhance my prospects of getting a job?

I would sincerely appreciate your replies to my situation.

Regards

Most certainly, But depends at what stage you go back to school.
What I mean by that is .........
Situation 1- You come to canada and look for work and within a month you get fed up and go to school and graduate with a masters within a year and a half.
Situation 2 - You slog for a couple of years in various labour jobs and you get frustrated and you start to hate canada and may be your decision to come here and go to school.

I would not try situation 1; my reasons would be
1-Initial investment will be extended
2-I am still not totally familiar with system and how the job market/hunt works.
3-I have not picked up on the communication skills yet so to network within my class or to really know who I would want to work for would be a little difficult to determine.

Why I would try situation 2
1-IN my intial couple weeks/months itself I might find a job and would not have to worry about anything or still doing any job I can still keep trying for my field job.
2-Even if I have to slog in the bottom line initially I can still pick up on my networking/communication/Engineering skills in the meantime.
3-I have known quite a few guys who landed up with jobs but were either fired or letgo or "laid off" coz they were never really comfortable with the job they were doing. During the interview they proved that they can do everything and anything that the job description calls for but when in reality things were not as thought. The attitude of lets say yes now and will figure out how to do it later does not always help.
4-My communication skills are good enough and I am confident enough now so If I go to back to school I know I will network with the people who are there in addition to the professors/research guys.
5-I would find a part time program where a lot of guys come down to update themselves giving me the chance to talk to them and hopefully understand what needs to be done further to sell myself.
6-Use the school to sell myself and secure a job before I get out of there.
Hope that helps
Azaz

Hey strat...

Do you think 5 months Canadian experience in your own field is enough to invite more interview calls.
What I percieve from the recruiters is that the gora employers requires atleast 3 years of canadian experience.
what you say ?

Azazf,

Dont forget that remaining out of your own field for an year or so, diminishes the bleak chances of getting a job in Canada(in engineering)

I am an Engineer myself and had been out of my field for approx 9 months in 2003. Two interviewers "politely" informed me of this as a weak point for engineering professionals (and they didnt hire me).
