Hello all,
My mom is diabetic patient and She have to take regular tablet to control diabetic every day. The medicine was purchased in India and prescribed by our family doctor too.
Parents came here on PR status in last year and bought with them medicine for 6 months and thought afterwards they can get medicine here via post from India and even was not sure as well that they are going to stay here for more than 6 months or not.
now they want to stay with us but medicine got finished and i asked my sister to send medicine here via post for my mom. in my past experience i never had any issue to bring medicine via parcel (early 2009) and we thought same way and she sent medicine for my mom for atleast another 9 months.
we were waiting for parcel for almost 1 and half month and today i receieved letter from CBSA and Health Canada that our parcel has been siezed and not going to deliver medicine to us due to food and drug control regulation, etc...
questions is
do i have to reply to letter received from health Canada with explanation why we import medicine from India or is not necessary and assuming that they are going to distroy medicine? is it any legal action against us?
is it any chance to get release medicine from CBSA or not?if we explain the situation.
cost of medicine is around 12000 rs.
another option - Can someone suggest me, how I can bring medicines from India, (Officially) from Gujarat?
or if anyone is coming very soon from Gujarat - India than please let me know and and i can purchase again medicine and deliver person to bring medicine here for atleast 3 to 4 months medicine would be a great help.
Please PM me if someone is ready to help me....
your reply would be much appreciated.
Thank you
Prescription medicines from foreign countries are prohibited in Canada. Generally courier companies in India don’t encourage shipper to put medicines in parcels. However, travellers are allowed to carry 90 days supply of prescription drugs while they travel. (and that with original packing, bill of pharmacy and prescription). So only way is to get them with any relative who is ready to carry it.
If your mom’s age is over 65 you can buy it very cheap as you have to only pay $2 per prescription to the pharmacist. Otherwise some medicines are highly expensive in comparison of India. If you are in Ontario you can apply for Trillium Drugs Benefit card and they can help with your parents’ medicine expenses. They can pay for the medicine expenses after 4% of your family income. Talk to any pharmacist for Trillium Drug Card and they will explain about that in detail.
RBO ,
Here s what I d suggest ..
Write a letter back to the CRA advising them that you were unaware of the regulation and that these medicines are meant for your mother who is a PR and stays with you.
That you would not do it again that you have become aware of this but request CBSA to release the medicines this time on health grounds if possible ..
They may oblige ..
Post it on CD in case any one is traveling from India and is willing to carry the medicines for you ... Generally CDs esp those known to you oblige for medicines and books / documents etc .

sorry i did not mentioned about age of my mom, she is 61 yrs old.
My dad's age is 65 yrs so he is eligible for medical benefits, but touch wood he doesn't have any problem.
i did research and applied for Trillium Health care benefits for my mom and waiting for reply.
i am going to write a letter to CBSA today and will update with result.
Thanks all of you for reply.
regards
just update:
CBSA sent medicine parcel back to India. My sister received parcel with all medicines.
no reply to my e-mail till now from CBSA.
Well, atleast you got the medicines back. It may not be of much use to your sister, but if the expiry dates are no in the near future, she can keep them for your parents to use when they visit her.
