Hi,

I would like to request for the information on studies in Medicine in Canadian universities. From the universities websites it seems to be a very competitive field where only approx. 10% succeed even after good grades and MCAT results.

Please share your experience if anyone has taken this path.

What are the other options for the students who does not get selected in Canada? Can they get some education loan if they go overseas (e.g. UK or AUS) for medicine studies?

I am holding a Canadian PR and soon will be moving to Canada from Singapore. The query is for my daughter who is doing her O level (10th std equivalent) & interested in studying Medicine.

Thanks.

There is a whole lot of write up about Medical Education and the profession here in Canada on this Canadian Desi Website.

Your daughter is in the 10th Standard there in Singapore. She has Two more years to complete before she applies to get into the University and then into the Medical Field here. You are right, only about 10% of the students succeed in getting into the Medicine. The entrance to it is given on merit. Some of them have scored 95% aggregate marks or more. So, the ones with 92 and above can hope to get into it, provided they took all of the required credits (courses) during the 10-11-& 12th grades and stood in the top few. Also the number of seats available to the students are only a very few. It looks like a very closed shop. So, help her study hard and provide all the help you can muster, after you settle here and get her into a very nice school.

Overseas Universities provide their own scholarships, so look into it. No loans are provided to students who leave Canada for higher studies. But you as parents can get cheap loans now at 3%/p.a., currently.

Hello,

I am curious to know which subject one would choose in High school,if student wishes to enter into Medicine field?

What is the minimum percentage should be achieved in High school and University education for Medicine admission in Canada?

Kids are in public schools ,so should they be tutored after school for nice percentage?

After High school which University to choose for getting into MD?

What is the merit scholarships for University undergraduate and MD studies?90% or more?and if student has got 90% then would the fees for his undergraduate studies (all 4 years)be paid by government?

Any tips and suggestions ?

Medicine program in Canada is a sham. In spite of good MCAT marks, many do not make it because the entire process is non-transparent. They give lot of weight to “Voluntary work” in third world countries. In fact there are a few organizations which conduct a tour to Caribbean countries. Lol! Then there is personal interview where how you respond to some silly question by a moron conducting the interview decides your fate. If you ever have watched “Miss World” competition, then you will get the idea how such interviews are conducted.

Each and every High School has a Vocational Guidance Coucilor, and it would fall squarely upon his shoulders to help you with the academic requirements, besides what you as Parents should do to help your child.

I will provide you with a few links to explore and you go through them first and you will have a better grasp of the educational system first and if you have sufficient answers to your queries and want better explanations to them, then you can post them here after that.

OMSAS... : http://www.ouac.on.ca/omsas/

Application Process

Students interested in applying to medical school need to start early in their career ! Applications through the COMPASS. OMSAS on-line application service are generally available in the summer (for the subsequent year) and students must create an account on OUAC and apply in the early fall of the year before you wish to attend. Therefore, it is very important to be prepared and review important dates and deadlines! Check out the OMSAS website for the most recent information regarding the medical school application process.

Admission Requirements. :
The majority of Ontario medical schools require certain science-based courses to be satisfied in order to qualify for admission, however, there are schools that do not ask for specific prerequisites. Several of the Ontario medical schools also require Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) scores with the applications for admission. In order to be considered for medical school, it is extremely important for applicants to have a significant amount of volunteer and work experience. In addition, most medical schools request to receive transcripts, essays and personal interviews from applicants. Make sure to research each school’s admission criteria to ensure you are eligible to apply. Visit the OMSAS website to review specific information regarding each of the six Ontario medical schools.

Cost to Apply to Medical School.. :
To apply to medical school an application service fee is required plus an institutional payment for each school you apply to. Find out more information about medical school fees and payment of fees.

Time Commitment and Required Concentration and Dedication...
Becoming a doctor takes many years of intensive study and research. It usually takes four years after your Bachelor’s degree to obtain a medical degree (although some university programs may last only 3 years). After that you will choose between Family Practice (2 years minimum) or other medical specialties (at least 4 years) and will spend your time as a resident physician training for certification while being paid (currently about $35,000 a year) to care for patients.
Please do the queries in here... : https://www.aamc.org/students/aspiring/basics/

Any score above 90 will surely merit a seat. There are references required by each system and preferably from one in very good standing in the community. Please be ready to provide them when the time comes. If you find a student will need additional tutoring, then, at this stage of the education, it will be well worth the efforts and it costs very minimal and in the current day technology, it could also be acquired remotely either through the internet facilities or through a COACH, for a nominal sum.

I have compiled a whole lot of materials for you to read and work with and it is in your PM. I will post it to you soon after this hits the web. It consists of all of the Rankings, Scholarships and Mcat Materials plus each of the links to different fields in one of the Universities, for you to get an expanded view of the Education provided by them. You can expect the same from any of the other Universities in other parts of Canada.

One more field that it needs attention is the MENTORING and I have to explore the same first and it merits posting to those who are very keen on entering into the Medical Sciences.

A lot of south asian students are enrolled in Canadian medical programs and do very well. You do not need to volunteer in third world countries, but you do need to be a "well rounded candidate" which means it is essential to have volunteer work in a leadership position on your resume and it helps to have a solid understanding of issues affecting health care in Canada and abroad for interviews.

They can't just accept on the basis of grades because too many students have the required grades. Grade inflation is quite a big issue in Canada and elsewhere. The best program to take is a health science program, but there are other options. Some people chose easier undergraduate degrees in order to get higher marks (grade inflation) and make sure to cover a lot of health care related topics through their volunteer work. I have a friend in medical school who was accepted out of an engineering program (this is a bad way to go, it is hard to get the required marks in engineering).

Different schools favour different types of candidates. For example, McMaster is a very well regarded school and takes a lot of candidates with varied undergraduate degreees and only requires the verbal score from the MCAT.

Advise your daughter to develop efficient study habits and maintain involvement in some activities outside school.

By issues affecting health care, I mean social determinants of health. Any volunteer work related to this would be looked upon favourably in my understanding. So, it does not have to be volunteering with a health organization but an organization serving marginalized people or a social justice organization, whatever interests her as long as she can articulate why she was interested and how this relates to her future career.
