im thinking of applying for PIO for new born as well but littel confuse between OCI AND PIO.
I am a canadian citizen with oci and wife has indian passport with PR.
baby is canadian born.
wat people suggest?

Some of us plan things ahead of time and some of us are in a hurry. If you are not....
To get an OCI for the child, a Foreign National, one of the Parent has to be holding a Foreign Passport. PIO Card can be obtained for the child, if the child is of Foreign Nationality, even if both of you are of Indian Nationality, at any time.
Then, you can decide what it is that you want for the baby. PIO is only valid for 15 years currently. It was slightly longer before, it was 20 years.
OCI is for LIFETIME. But they might not provide you with this, or might ask for renewal with an updated picture at a later date to stamp the newer Passports with an OCI endorsement. Because, as the child grows up and matures, they change in shape and the picture will also change with it.
NRI's who are generally Indian Citizens, see also the restricted countries, with a foreign Passport can apply and get the PIO papers within TWO to FOUR weeks, if they are in a hurry. Also the cost is very effective as compared to the VISA fees, and for the 365 bucks U.S, you get it for15 years. But the only restriction is that if your kid stays in India with this PIO papers for longer than 180 days, has to report to the Local Police and inform them about their overstay. WHO CARES.
OCI is a little cheaper. But they charge us canuks 45 bucks for stamping. Six of one and half a dozen of the other. Please have 400 US dollars handy PLUS the other expenses and the hassles to go with it. (See the chart)
Please make sure that you both have a letter of authorization permitting each other to travel with the kid, till the kid grows up, for the kids travel, attested by a Notary Public and slip it into your Passports, just in case you have to travel or get out in a hurry, across the border or to any other place out side of Canada. Just a reminder.
