I know that in our culture, when you go to see someone's baby for the first time, you take a gift or shagun or something.

However if there is going to be a baby shower ahead of time where one will give a gift, do you think shagun is still required?

any thoughts? thanks.

In our Indian Tradition, we always gift on any occasion. I feel it should be here too....'Shagun' can be a gift card of Toysrus, Pleasemum or Childrenplace....or newborn cloths or anything like that, and with a nice greeting card.

As always, blessings are on the top!!!

So do you think its required/expected to give equally expensive gifts but twice? the problem is it is for a relative of mine, someone I am not very close with.

I feel not necessarily required an expensive one but still a gift is must. The best one (or expensive) should be after the baby is born.

have u ever gone to a baby shower? Because mother to be's usually open gifts in front of everyone, no one wants to look bad (read cheap) when everyone else is watching.

I was thinking of buying the nice gift for the shower and then when going to see the baby, presenting a teddy bear or other such 'cute' toy.

I agree with your approach

Being a twin mommy I've been in this dilemma many times (I always receive two gifts and also prefer to give two for each occasion; I look for deals so that’s its not much stress on the budget). I've seen people appreciate a personalized gift more than anything else and many mothers save them as souvenirs too. After baby shower on birth I've gifted, T-shirts with baby's first picture on it, a mug where mom can have her drink with baby's photo, a bedside/crib side frame with baby photo on it. You'll have to ask the family for the picture though but many times they circulate on their own. These are inexpensive but thoughtful.

Hope it helps.

Jona
