Just wondering, does it make any difference if any Indian/Chinese families or community living near by or not?
I lived in few places in small US town where only 1-2 Indian families in whole city and we enjoyed most in those small town. Good and bad people are everywhere and every community. A small Indian shop was 30 mins drive and we need to go once in two weeks there.
I noticed in Calgary, Vancouver, NY, SFO that where chinese/indian/mexican/paki people live in big quantity those are not one of the cleanest, expensive, well organized, low crime areas in city. Like Surrey, BC or NE Calgary are one the cheapest and high crime areas in whole town.
My point is local own community should not be the only criteria for living or buying homes.
Hi Rahul_singh
I think this is an interesting topic. I have lived in an area with few indians, then with MORE indians and now i live in Surrey!
I can understand the desire of new immigrants to seek out familiar language, food, culture, people (ie/ their relatives may live nearby). However I remember one person saying (in surrey): "Why do I have to learn english? This is Canada".
It depends on the individuals' value system and motivation. Why did they move? What are their goals? Are they open to new experiences or new ways of living? If a desi (for ex) moves into a largely caucasian neighborhood, their children may want to be 'westernized'. It depends on the individual again. Many people I have noticed worry about their children retaining culture, language etc.
I have numerous clients that tell me they dont bother learning english because they want to ensure their children retain their ethnic language. Thats fine, but then the parents are at a loss - they cannot communicate effectively in the majority language of this country. I usually give them my example and tell them that if the kids have learned their ethnic language at a young age and can speak it pretty well, that there is no harm in the parents speaking to their children in english, especially if it will help them improve their own language skills.
The one thing I enjoy about living in Surrey is being able to see Hindi Movies at the theatre
I have a question or thought of my own: I can understand if family class immigrants migrate and settle in "ghettos" because of family etc, but why would Independant (aka professionals) do the same?

Probably because the 'personal(read family/culture)' and the 'professional' are different areas of the life that make a 'whole'? Each area has to be satisfied in the way the individual sees fit?
I think its a personal decision based on a lot of factors. A majority of my friends here are desis. However, I personally would/did not seek out a desi area to settle into. I do not consider living in a desi area as important to my personal or professional well-being. At the same time, my mind is open to opportunities(personal/professional) arising from being around desis.
Most people I have met here are like me. There are also some who swing to the extremes of desi association/disassociation.

When I was hunting for the house (small town Guelph) I had following points in mind:
1. Nearness to my wife’s work place as she can’t drive.
2. House close is the school
3. Groceries
4. What is the appreciation of properties in that locality over time.
When we finally moved in, there were no desi families close by, although we would have preferred, but never considered that.
