HI,
I am a software engineer and have been working in USA for about 5 years now. We have just got our PR visa and are in the planning stages of the move. During my research about places to live, etc, i discovered that many professionals were very frustrated in their job search due to 'canadian experience' or lack thereof, and other unmentionable factors. Engineers having to work at gas stations was the common refrain. Kinda defeats the purpose for importing people in skilled worker category when you cant use their skill.
However, this is all secondhand info so i want to know if this is true? If yes, does any US experience count as 'canadian' experience.
Secondly, what would be the best place to move to wrt job availability. I really want to avoid going to Toronto.
And finally, do they know about great universities and collges in india like IITs and IIMs or they are considered to be another one of the same third-wrold-sounding colleges.
Thanks in advance
Why dont you make a landing and go back to USA?
Unless you are very confident and think you can get a job soon, its better to keep your present job (if you can).
Yes, its true. As you said There are many factors.
The Canadian job market is much much smaller than where you are coming from. That in itself creates a problem for so many skilled people who are pouring in.
What is your Skill set?

I once made a mistake, but I was wrong about it.
suttu,
If I am right, u are not getting the green card in US. So u r moving to Canada.
U have to take chances. Hi tech market is not the same anymore like the late 90s-2000 where a diploma holder from India could land a job. Now things are different.
Please dont start a fight reg. IIT's. And u sound arrogant. That's a big NO when u r looking for a job in Canada.
Good luck.

Dear Desi in Ottawa:
I have a green card. Just got it last year. Applied for canada after getting it. Want to get out of US and heard Canada was a decent alternative. If i sound arrogant, it is less intent and more perception. I did not mean to offend anyone. The question on IITs was just to gauge if education or work experience has any bearing on how people perceive your worth, or you are just another desi who has to go through the wash-the-cars-sell-grocery cycle before they can do anything else. That would help me in the way i apply for jobs.
Dear Mercury,
My plans exactly. Land, go back and continue the current job in the US but keep looking for option in canada. I have two years before the limitation expries, right? If nothing turns up, too bad.
The important question is where to go. I want to raise a family in a safe and decent city with some indian community with ample software related jobs. Didnt get any info on that. I would really appreciate some insights.
Skill set: architect, design and manage development of mission-critical software tools for Fortune 500 employer. Expertise in both web and windows deployed platforms.
Is this the way they want skill set or do they want:
10 years software experience, 5 years US experience, .NET, J2EE, CORBA, COLDFUSION, blah blah...
thanks for all your help

The Cynic
Several factors, both push and pull and these are all my personal opinions, no disrespect intended:
Push:
Something is going on in the US that i dont like. Religeous fundamentalism and intolerance are at a rise. Not safe for culture, faith and values. Moreover, there are more indians in Canada as a proportion of the population and I am sure they have more impact on the culture and agenda there.
Healthcare is a scam and expenses will continue to grow despite insurance. The famed 'better-health-facilities' in US talk is ont true. I have seen more morons in clinics here than at the mental asylum in Agra, and here, they were not all patients. I have to take an appointment with a specialist at least 3 months in advance, 8 months for a super-specialist for my daughter. Dont know how it is in canada, but i know its free and you get treated even if you have no money. They talk about high taxes in canada and then deduct about 15% of my pay for insurance.
Pull:
Most important, it is easier to bring family into canda than it is in US. I am an only child and my parents are old. IF i try to do this in US, it would take 10+ years and then they will not be covered for insurance or anything. I cant leave them in India. If i go back to india, my kids may get a raw deal. Middle path is canada.
I dont see much difference in the quality of life between US and canada. A few bucks here and there doesnt matter if you can maintain the same quality of life.
Bottom line: I dont like USA and its politico-economic system. Canada is not bad.
Still dont know what places i should target.
