Dear colleagues,
Will someone infrom to me the current situation of INTERNET connection in Toronto and Vancouver regions.
1)Are all rented apts/rooms provided with basic internet connections or broadband cable connections?
2) What are the procedures to apply for the same,if a telephone is present in the rented room?
3)What permissions have to be taken from the landlord before making a connection?
4)What are the costs involved in the above?
5)In Toronto and Vancouver what are the costs (packages)available for installing the net in your room/house?
6)Is there a concept of free net ?Who offers it?
7)How are the net charges calculated from the phone bills and how do you convicne this and pay this to your alndlord or to those from whom you have rented this room/apt?
8)Car-parking is also charged extra in a rented home or not?
9)If one does not even have a telephone in this home how does one go about applying for the same and then installing/obtaining the net connections?

Please furnish to me the details on the above, really quite practical unless the home which one rents/buys has it preinstalled!
Atleast some links for the above may also prove usefull not only for me but most of us reading this query AND a revision for most already settled!

All your questions are too generic.

If you are staying in a 'regular' apartment. {not in somebody's house or basement} then you should have a phone outlet provided(phone jack).

Of course you will have to pay for phone service.
You can use any ISP providers for internet service and of course you do not need anybody's permission. eg. AOL etc which offer unlimited access for a monthly fee.

Or you can get cable modem/DSL etc. That would depend on availability in your area. I don't live in Vancouver or Toronto but I can't imagine too many places in those areas where it won't be available.

Normally for your ISP, for your access you will have a local number so you really should not be getting charged extra as long as you have an unlimited local calling phone package.

All this can be arranged for once y ou call the local phone comp/cable provider etc.

Parking is almost always paid. however you can also get free parking in a lot of apartments so it really depends

Information below relates to a rented apartment in a building, not necessarily to a rented basement.

1) Most apartment rentals do NOT include cable / internet services, unless you are sharing the apartment with someone who has already had them installed. However, hardware is usually in place in apartment buildings, so 'installation' as such usually involves simply having the connection activated and a technician coming over to plug it in for you and arrange internal wiring.

2) Phone jack should be in place, you have to call Bell Canada, Sprint or Primus to have it activated and have a number alloted. When activated, plug your phone in, and use it. If you get yourself a cable internet connection, you could opt for a VOIP phone from Primus (which provides a land telephone line that is hooked up thru your internet connection).

3) Generally, no permission required (your landlord assumes you will get one of these), if in doubt ask before you rent.

4) Hi-speed internet $45 per month. If you opt for dial-up, around $20 per month with unlimited access. Dozens of packages, deals, etc that are available, check out www.bell.ca, www.rogers.com, www.sprint.ca, www.primustel.ca for more details.

5) As above

7) Depends on what package you use / your arrangement with your landlord / person that you share your apartment with, if applicable.

8) May or may not be included in your rent. Rental management company / landlord will tell you up-front.

9) Call a provider, technician will come across.

Hope this helps
