Hi,
I am an immigrent to canada. Currently living in US on H1B visa.
I bought my car in US. Planning to move (driving) to canada directly. Do I need pay any taxes at the port of entry?
Kindly share your expreiences/comments.
Regards,
If you are moving to canada , you need to import it
If you already included it in "goods to follow" then only 182$ + any modifications reqd to import it in canada otherwise import fee + GST

We will find a way or we will make one
Thanks a lot for your message!!
I appreciate if you can also mention, how much is the import fee and what is GST.
Also note that, I landed in canada an year back itself. And after getting the PR card, I moved to US on H1B visa. First time, when I landed in canada, I did not mention anything in "goods to follow"
Regards,
But now you are moving to canada and plan to live there so you will have to import your car .
Import fee is 182$ cdn at the border
+ GST - 7% the cost of the car in cdn dollars above 10K cdn
So if your car is 20000Cdn , you will pay 7% on 10K .
+ modifications to your car .

We will find a way or we will make one
If your car was not made in N. America then you have to
pay Customs Duty (7%) and the Federal tax GST (8%), on the book value of the car. Otherwise just GST.
Go to http://www.riv.ca" rel="nofollow">LINK to get the details on what modification needs to be done on the car.
- Day time running lights etc.
