Hi ,

I need to get my front brakes done (most likely brake pads, a small possibility of rotors).

The local mechanic gave me 2 quotes - one when he gets the parts (and gets the commission) and the second when I get the parts. The first quote would be lesser.

Which would be the better way - Can I ask him to insist to use a particular quality OR if I chose to buy them myself , which is a good place to buy ... I was thinking of getting from Toyota and getting it fixed by the local mechanic .

Any other things to be kept in mind.

Brake Job. : The total cost of good parts, (NO NAME) are Two Rotors, $60 PLUS $30 for the CERAMIC PADS +HST. Do not settle for anything less.
Then an hours installation. Ask for a installation kit also, No clue on its cost. They all are stainless steel springs and a ketchup pack of Moly grease.??

FH

Just for comparison. Good rotors, they all are high carbon castings, machined, recessed, cross drilled etc., Good make, but low priced.

Call them and price them. : Please look for Ceramics. Under $30.

Hi Fido,

Please use OEM parts, you can do the brake job with your own Mechanic.

Just buy parts from dealer and supply to your mechanic....may price wise will cost you little bit more but trust me it is worth it.

Common problem with aftmkt brake pads - after replacement with aftmkt brake pads you will heard weird noise when you apply the brakes.

2 cents from my side......

FH ~ Thanks a ton ...I shied from doing all the research myself which you have done and provided ... I wish you could be a paid Consultant on CD :) .. ( though I m sure your zeal for helpfulness is priceless)

I shall keep the ceramics in mind ...

RBO~ You have provided the last word - I was also having the same thought of buying it from Toyota.

Brakes and Tires are the most important things in your car. Always get the best..even if it costs a few bucks more..your life depends on it..don't compromise on safety.

As long as I have Nimbu Mirch and mata kee chunni , I need not worry about safety associated with tires or brakes .
