Hi All,

We reached Toronto. Immigration was smooth, no issues. We are staying at a hotel in Scarborough provided by wife's company for a week. Started looking for accommodation on internet now. Many options I see on Kijiji are semi-furnished. If fully furnished, they are usually basement apmnt, which as u all say is very dark n gloomy in winters.

Looking for some area easy/quick for her to travel and also where I can easily find automotive job. Right now want to go for cheap and best option which is convenient for her work place and job search for myself as we are on a single salary.

- Wife's office is in Queen's Quay West. I'm yet to search for an Automotive job. So which area do you suggest for accommodation? Budget: Around C$ 1000 for a fully furnished house.

- Would Mississauga, GTA etc have cheaper rentals but costlier to travel to work due to expensive Go/other bus passes?

- Downtown apmnts look good but expensive. If I find a job very far, I would be spending a lot on travel right/.

Need to find accommodation by next Tuesday as company-provided accommodation is only for a week. Please suggest areas!

Thanks,
AE

Ae,
Welcome to Toronto.
Your wife's office is downtown, which is accessible by subway and hence you need not worry. You can live anywhere from Kipling to Scarborough subway stations and your wife will reach office in just 30-40 mins, which is a normal time of travel.

Now your options are many. Mainly Basements come in Mississauga or Brampton which is outside the subway line. Also basements come in SCarborugh.

Be careful on leases. All leases are one year and hence not suitable.

At this time (since you donot have a job), I would suggest that you looks for small one bed basements (basements are not that bad once you have a job) which will aask a rent of min $ 700. As your owner to give you month to month accomodation. Most furnished places will come with a one year lease only (unless it is a desi).

Mu suggestion (and only suggestion) is that you find accomodation near Islington / Kipling subway station (rare to find cheap accomodation) as you have better jobs in Mississauga (lot of factories) or brampton.

Other option is also Scarborough where you can travel to Ajax / Oshawa but other CD's to tell you of the job oppertunities there.

So in conclusion, I would suggest that you initially take up a sharing / small basement on a month to month rent. Once you get a job, things will get much clearer. Plus once you wife starts working, she will find new friends in her office and they will guide you both better.

Try mississauga near sq1 , hurontario/dundas area you can get 2bd for $1000 to 1200 on average apartment.... it will also be easy to commute to downtown and kind of you are in center off all area.

dont be afraid to lease out one year, dont jump to much just stable for year , you will know city well and get familiar with rules , regulation and work culture, next year you can take firm decision.

things will change as time pass by so beginning just stay calm

Mississauga/ Etobicoke is the best option for both you.. you can easily find walk-out basement for $1000 (Mississauga/Etobicoke ) or around $1200 to $1300 per month apartment near Dundas and Paisley area [Mississauga]....this range Apartment is not great but it is good for a start.

I can point you apartments at 4071 Old Dundas Street (Off Dundas Stree tWest and Jane Street). I have lived here. Semi basement is around $ 850. 1 bed. One bus to Jane or Islington subway station.
Whites only area and hence you may not find any desi's. Desi's can initially help you find jobs, give tips etc.. so you may need to be with them.

Bad part is 1 year lease.

However, I feel that you should not live in Mississauga, since your wife already has a job in downtown and you must be atleast in Toronto. Job oppertunities are more in Mississauga side. Scarborough, you will find a lot of Gujju's and desi's apart from Sri lankan and it will be more like mini india.

Square 1 and all are for rich IT people or people from the ME with a lot of cash. Housing is good but expensive there.

Never sign one year lease, unless both of you have a job. Otherwise it will be a disaster.

May be you can also be at the Shepherd subway line. That area is a new part of Toronto and hence more desi's / basements will be there.

North York, 20-Forest Manor Road.... I forgot the owner's name; he is from Singapore.. and has a few condos under him.

Downtown is easy to reach from that place; go to Don Mills Station, change over at Younge line and off to down town.
