If we switch our car insurance to a new provider , does the previous policy and provider cancel automatically OR continues until we notify them ??

It continues until we notify the previous provider.
Most auto insurances are one year contract and there is a penalty if you break it in between. You have to notify your current provider to cancel.

I think there is no notice period if you cancel it at the time of renewal i.e. when you get a notice of renewal you have one month time to decide and if you notify them with in that month you don't have to pay any penalty. I did it for my policy last year.
Thanks. I thought it would be automatic once you switched ( similar to landlines phone companies ) but it is not so .
I had switched from Belair to Johnsons and found charges still coming in from the old provider .... Called them and they advised that they have back dated the cancellation & would be sending me a refund ...
Try Johnsons if you have a G ... I got a quote for 204/- compared to 337/- from Belair .
