In short, we landed here on May 9th and for 2 months stayed in basement apartment and completed all formalities in 15-20 days. Then another 15 days for driving licence. by that time, we were lucky to get good condo, because of realtors who was so very helpful and who is still guiding us (senior person) and thanks to lawyer and mortgage manager too, who came home since we had two small children in hand. We shifted to our own house in less than 2 months time.We feel God has helped us in the form of these good people. We got settled down.
Before landing, we started applying for job for my husband who is electrical engg (20 years of experience in electrical/maintainence/ handling breakdown/ installation of foreign machineries/troubleshooting) worked for biggest structural steel orgn in UAE for 11 years who built airport/airport hangers/mall of emirates and big malls. He had his own business and making control panels seeing specifications. His income in dubai was dhs 20000/- pm
It is nearly 3 months and I and my husband, both are putting efforts for getting job for him and we have applied thro all sites, visited all HR (they are useless) and till now, he got 3-4 telephonic interviews and the time gap between 1st and final interviews is 4-6 weeks ( very long procedure). one of the recruiters told us my husband's ex-boss gave excellent references. We know everybody has to wait for 3-6 months for getting job, till then can my husband go for odd jobs like working in gas station, security guard or for that matter any odd jobs to get canadian experience. In fact we advertised he is ready to work for big companies voluntarily since he is talented and skilled. Can somebody guide us how to go about getting odd jobs? any help will be appreciated.
thanks in advance.

The job market can be tough to navigate and I think that your husband should not take odd jobs. He needs to be full time focused on finding the right job. Sometimes you have to step back and do volunteer work, or internship ( career bridge website) or even try getting a mentoring ( see mentoring partnership) relationship going. My experience is that the odd jobs take up too much time and they also ruin your motivation and spirit. Since he is already having some success let him register with a local agency -immigrant serving...dont think oh these agencies just give advice we already know. Thru the agencies some employers do their recrutiment. So u will miss that source if you dont go thru an agency ( e.g. Costi, jvs or jobstart). also try to get a job for yourself, something part time so you can bring some income. Better to have two ppl trying rather than one. If you feel comfortable you can take an odd job in shoppers drug mart avoid factory work or gas stations..just do something lighter and the environment should be good. Health is v important and also safety. If you dont understand how to do something always ask. Out here asking questions is very important and is strongly encouraged. Wish you all the best!

Hi,
Odd jobs lead to frustration, humiliation and lack of confidence.
I would have approached "Access" as they provide good links for Engineers.
One of my freind from U.A.E. got a good break thru. them.
However it depends from person to person as well as the present scope and opportunity.
But no harm giving a try.

I second everything that Michelle288 has said. To the best of my knowledge very few persons get jobs through applying to vacancies. Almost always, the best jobs are through networks and if you don't have a network the only way to get one is to create one- cold call, attend workshops, volunteer, meet persons in the field with the intention of finding out more about what is required in Canada as against asking for a job), join mentorship programs and bridging programs and whatever other program your husband can join that can help. Also if your husband's job requires a professional license and he doesnt have one then it would be useful to start the process of trying to acquire one. I would not brush aside the help provided by job search agencies either. Looking for a good job is a full time job and doing odd jobs would not only take away from that but may also be very disheartening.

thanks cd's for your guidance and advice.
I tried to get job for myself too, but salary offered $1400-1500/- wherein commuting is tedious. I will have to keep my children in child care whereby they are asking each child $275/- per week for one child full time and there is no seats available for part-time. that means more than my salary is gone in child care. It is pointless. I am a mnaagement graduate and worked for 14 years in shipping Industry, when I left in 2001 in India, I was working on managerial position in the biggest shipping company in the world Maersk (A.P Moller group).I used to work for 14-16 hours to meet target and reporting to their office at antwerp.I won't be able to handle such a long working hours and now I am trying for business opportunities like coin laundry, accomodation business esp for new immigrants. We did not receive any help so, I wish to help those people who don't have anybody to help, recruiting agency etc and for that, I have patiently take things slowly and explore business market here.
