VOIP is Voice over Internet Protocol. Its a technology where voice data packets are transferred over internet instead of a regular PSTN.

Basically what it means to you (or any layman end user) is that when you get a VOIP connection from a service provider, you will get a device that you will need to connect to your high speed internet connection, and you will have a working phone line. You do not need a computer to make calls, you can connect a regular phone or cordless to the VoIP adapter.

The benefit of VOIP is that you can take it (the device) along with you where ever you travel. For example if you travel to India, all you need to do is to take your VOIP adapter with you and attach it to a high speed internet connection in India and you can take and make calls as if you were in Canada.

The best that I've seen so far is Majic Jack (www.majicjack.com). It costs you $40 one time and there is no monthly bill for a year. You can pay another $20 and get it for another year or just pay one time $60 and get it for five years. I've been using it since last two plus years and works like a charm. My parents in India also have one, they can make unlimited calls to anywhere in North America for free.

Feel free to ask more if you have any doubts.

Cheers!

Primus rents the line from Bell Canada. So no difference in sound quality. I think they probably save on customer service when you call them. Minimum wait time is around 40 minutes before you hear a live human voice.

I have not done cost-benefit analysis of Speak Out offer from Seven Eleven. But my usage is very less , and don't want to be tied with a contract and so this offer is a good fit for me.

1. The promo gives you a phone absolutely free for a $100 talk time with expiry of 365 days. Grabbed a Nokia 2760 worth $90. ( If you don't want phone check out if somebody else is willing to trade with you, or how about as a chirstmas/new year gift ?)

2. No activation, system access charges etc. Guess there is a monthy 911 charge which is close to a $.

3. It is an unlocked phone.

4. Best part is when I toppped up my account there was an additional 25% talk time apart from the purchased $100 . They did not advertise that at all.

Promo runs till Dec 2008. For additional info :

PS:
I am new to Canada and CD has been very useful in providing a lot of information. It is no doubt the individual's responsibility to seive the good/relevant information. Good job folks who take your time to post messages.

Some useful info ...

Some other good value prepaid cellphone plans are from Speakout Wireless ($25 / year) , PetroCanada and Virgin .... check out the following link if you are thinking to go for a prepaid one ....

The cheapest still remains PC Mobile with internet access .... Other wise Speakout $25 card is valid for 365 days .
