How good is Canada for outsiders is always a matter of perennial debate, but there are two instances, that have always made me feel proud about Canada's
committment towards multiculturalism
(1) Go to city of Brampton's website. There is a picture of men playing cricket for the "play & experience" section
http://www.city.brampton.on.ca/home.taf
(2) I can get TTC info in Gujarati
http://www.toronto.ca/ttc/multilingual/multilingual_translations.htm
Even getting TTC info in Hindi would be appreciative enough, but getting information in Gujarati is more than what I can ask for.
Even though I haven't used the Gujarati service, so I do not know how useful itis, it is still a commendable effort on TTC's part
Meghal
Some more on the list would be :
1. Emergency bell / Panic button explanation in Tamil in many hospital rooms across the GTA
2. Settlement services being offered to new comers in Tamil other Indian languages.

I am a Gents and not a Ladies.
All this is available in GTA only. In Alberta all these facilities are mising. I guess the Slum vote bank(Refugees/New Immigrants) is in eastern Canada.

You know you are a desi when ........ You spew forth the virtues of India, but don't want to live there...............You've never had a tanning salon membership
Only fear is with the name of Promotion of multiculturalism people who migrate here never try to learn/understand language or culture of Canada. There is big desi lobby all over Canada who still behaves, eat, sit, talk, dress, speak, think like village from where they came 10 years back.
Same is the problem in US in all the southern States population of Mexican are so much that they never try to learn English.
When kids start schooling they have hard time talking with other kids because they never heard a word of English at home.
Rahulji,
That is exactly the way The First Nation, Innuits and the Meti's felt about the "then immigrants". Wait till a few years just they changed the names of Calcutta to Kolkotta or Madras to Chennai, Brampton will become New Amristar, Markham will become Puthu Eelam and there will be suitable names for other locations. If you donot believe me they have changed the name of small road in the heart of mississauga from Clarica Drive to Absolute Way. Anything is possible in Canada. It is either you change yourself or you change others. In my organization all the white guys are adept at eating Desi food like Samosa or Kulcha or Naan. How many of our Desis are going out for big Steak Dinners with a Friday nite out on the local tavern. We still make Briyani at home, watch Don on pirated CD and visit the mandir on the weekends. The other change will be each of the municipalities of Brampton or Mississauga the Mayors and councillors can be redesignated as Chaudharis or Mukhias. In Markham we will find a big banyan tree and we will have the tamil style of "18 Patti " Zamindar. If you go out on the Chinese mall near the intersection of Dundas/HWY 10 you will find signs that do not eat Paan and spit it here !.
We Desis will change this land of Canada, may be we will even get a new name for it like Canastan or Desistan.

Speech by Thomas Friedman of The New York Times....
"When we were young kids growing up in America, we were told to eat our
vegetables at dinner and not leave them. Mothers said, 'think of the
starving children in India and finish the dinner.' And now I tell my
children: 'Finish your maths homework. Think of the children in India
who would make you starve, if you don't.'"

Have you been to these local food joints? Desis do go out for steak dinners on Friday night. I am a vegetarian, but still prefer to go to Earl's or Cactus club over many Indian restaurants. Yes, we make Briyani and Chappathi at home - nothing wrong with that. But we also have cereals, sandwiches etc . And I love cooking pasta (which is neither a Canadian nor an Indian dish, btw) at home!
We do watch Indian movies (I prefer the original ones with good quality - not the pirated ones), as much as English movies.

Partly right. Yes, we (as well as immigrants from other countries) will shape this country, as it will shape us. That is what multi-culturalism is all about.
After all pizza, bagels etc were also unheard of in North America not too long ago.
