Is it illegal to leave Canada right after landing and not personally wait for the PR card to arrive in the mail?

If it's not illegal, am I risking anything with my PR status by leaving right after landing?

How long does it take to get a travel document?

Is the application for a travel document an application for a PR replacement card as well or i will have to apply for a replacement card separately?

you need to get your PR card in order to reenter the counry. you will not be allowed into the country if you do not have it. it takes 4 weeks to get it. and you need aperm add to recieve the card. the day we were doing our first entry the immigration officer had this guy who was returning to canada after his first visit. he had not waited for his PR card. They put him on the next flight home. he lost his immigrant sttus as far as i know. he may have appealed etc etc. but thta is added headache. dont you think so? but i have known ppl who have relatives in canada who get their cards and bring them to them. so may be you can try that. but make sure you dont let the officer feeel that u are just there to do your landing.\

best of luck

Correct. But you can also get a temporary travel document.

Are you joking? Was the guy not carrying a PR card? Well in that case he can be deported. But what I understand from your post is that he was deported because he did not wait for he PR card. Your post does not clarify if was or not carrying a PR card.

Why? Is it unlawful to come to Canada for initial landing? You are landing to get the PR status. Once you get the PR status it is up to an individual to decide where he wants to reside. Remember the 2 /5 rule? You seem to have forgotten that after you gave some 'valuable' advise in another post.

Mods, in my opinion you must make 'Janmeja' the official jester of the site.

Go to http://www.cic.gc.ca" rel="nofollow">LINK which is canada's immigration department website. it has an entire section on the Permanent resident card.

According to the site, if you leave canada while ur application for the PR Card is being processed you may have a problem returning because you need PR card to even board a 'commercial carrier' (ie plane bus boat train) .. YOu can obtain a temporary travel document at $50 each time.

According to the site, you can apply for the temporary travel document at a canadian visa office abroad..and it doesnt say if you can get a document urgently.

It seems that a person can leave..but coming back will be more of a concern. Just go to the following site for moreinfo:

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/pr-card/index.html

Good luck!

If it is true that someone tried to enter Canada subsequent to landing without possession of the PR card, how did the air carrier (I am assuming it's a flight) allow that person to board the plane without proof of legal immigration status in Canada?

Because air carriers can be mightily fined for allowing passengers to board without verifying their legal status in the destination country.

Well.. when you first land I believe you get a document that is attached to your passport (the exact name of the form eludes me..sorry) and the PR card is separate. The document identifies your legal status as a permanent resident in Canada. The PR sort of 'replaces' that card eventually .. but the original document I believe can suffice.
