are there any disadvantages for applying for employment insurance after working for one year? Would it affect
-citizenship process,
-getting visitors visa for parents or
-sponsoring parents or
-credit score.
we are only expecting to be on it for a few weeks? any advice?

EI I think is considered being on Welfare.. but again.. how would they know?

I once made a mistake, but I was wrong about it.
EI is not welfare and will not affect you in citizenship process, getting visitors visa for parents or credit score. It WILL affect you in sponsoring parents if your income goes below the LICO.
EI does not and should not affect any of the things listed by michelle288 as you have paid for it per pay check when you were working. It is your right. regarding sponsoring parents, you should do it after getting full time employment after your EI is over. One more thing, take a course to enhance your skills while you are on EI and govt. pays for it.
I don't think one can just go on EI. There are certain conditions you have to meet to get the EI payments.
Medical reasons, Laid Off from work etc..
