I have a question regarding EI:
A person works for 'company A' as a fulltime employee for 9 months. He then resigns from 'company A' and joins 'company B' as full time employee.
If he gets laid off by 'company B' in two months after he joins will he still be eligible to recieve EI?
In other words will they consider a person's previous employment if
(i) the person changes jobs by resigning except the last job
(ii) gets laid off in the last job without completing 900 hours in the last job but accumulates 900 full time hours in all the jobs put together.
Also, is it possible to claim EI if a person works as a contractor (40 hrs per week and completes 900 hours on the contract) once the contract ends?

My job entails working with people who are on EI benefits. The below is what I understand:
The maximum benefits are $413/week (it is calculated at 55% I believe..however the maximum you can receive (regardless of your income) is $413/week.
The duration of your part 1 EI benefits is calculated on the number of hours you have worked. I have yet to see anyone on EI for one year (Maternity benefits are a different thing - They can receive benefits for ayear I believe).
If you leave your job for any reason (terminated, quit etc) and you can present a rational as to why you quit - your claim will be assessed on a case by case basis. Lay off is the most basic reason and generally doesnt require a rationale.
There are benefits and employment measures that an individual who is currently on Ei (or who has been on EI within the past 3 years ) can access including training assistance.

You require around 900 hours (depending on the region where you work) to claim EI. Generally you should be laid off from your last place that you worked to claim EI.
If you work on contract (regular payroll, NOT cash job) and you pay EI premium through payroll, you can claim EI benefits. You would generally be considered laid off if the contract does not renew at the end of the term.

This is 100% true.. I have a friend who had quit his job caz the employer was asking him to work extra hours everyday.. after 3 months when he applied for EI..he did get the EI...
Also, if u apply for EI to take care of some sick person in ur family, then depending on the individual case, u are eligible to get EI.. this is from personal experience, where my wife quit her job to take care of my son after his eye surgery. She asked for 1 month's leave, but the company declined. so she quit her job. After about 45 days, when I called up the HRDC, telling them the facts, the person said that, "Applying for EI is not a problem, but whether your EI will be approved or not will depend on the officer in front of whom ur case will b presented"
My wife did apply for the EI, and eventually it was approved [though it took about another 20-25 days for approval].

well no friend of mine but it is me who got EI after quitting my job and going back to study. But dont try it, it is a very very tough process and sometime get extended to period of six months till you get first check from EI. If somebody is in similar situation PM me, I can explain in detail.
