Can anyone advise if one can open a bank account in Canada in advance prior to arrival and produce that bank statement as proof of funds when arriving?

you only need to carry the settlement funds required for your family size [regardless of what you indicated you had on the forms]

Many thanks for the clarification. I was under the impression that you can open an account, lets say with an overseas branch of a Canadian Bank (eg. Bank of Nova Scotia etc) and have an account in Canada before you land. I believe there will be others having the same incorrect impression. I surely will get in touch with you on arrival though its not going to be soon.

What people are suggesting is wrong. You can open a Bank account in whichever country you are eg. You can open a Royal Bank account in the country of origin and you can continue using the same when you land here. Furthermore a SIN # is not required initially to open a bank account in Canada. I have done that so have many others
