Can anyone advise if one can open a bank account in Canada in advance prior to arrival and produce that bank statement as proof of funds when arriving?

Hi 1Gujju,

You CAN NOT open a bank account in Canada prior to arrival. You need to land here, get a stamp on your passport for entry in Canada. You also need your SIN card, coz any bank you go to open your a/c, will need that for income tax purpose. Coz the interest that you earn on your a/c, get reported to CCRA (thru your SIN). I work with CIBC, one of the largest banks in Canada. Just get in touch with me once you are here, and I'll help you in that matter.

Many thanks for the clarification. I was under the impression that you can open an account, lets say with an overseas branch of a Canadian Bank (eg. Bank of Nova Scotia etc) and have an account in Canada before you land. I believe there will be others having the same incorrect impression. I surely will get in touch with you on arrival though its not going to be soon.

What people are suggesting is wrong. You can open a Bank account in whichever country you are eg. You can open a Royal Bank account in the country of origin and you can continue using the same when you land here. Furthermore a SIN # is not required initially to open a bank account in Canada. I have done that so have many others

Hi ccherryl,

By the way my ID is "reachash", not "people". My earlier post was as under :

Hi 1Gujju,

Now I shall explain the reason for that. As far as SIN # is concerned, although you can open an acct ( without SIN) with Foreign passport and landing papers, but you still have to report your SIN ASAP for not only tax purpose, but also in order for the bank to give you O/D facilities. With ref to your point that, "You can open a Bank account in whichever country you are eg. You can open a Royal Bank account in the country of origin and you can continue using the same when you land here",

I HAVE NO IDEA HOW WOULD YOU OPEN A BANK A/C WITH ROYAL BANK, OR ANY CANADIAN BANK, WHILE YOU ARE IN INDIA OR ELSEWHERE.

please let me know the same, as to how would you open a bank acct from other country, even without obtaining the status of LEGAL RESIDENT.

I would appreciate your reply. I mean it will enhance my knowledge.

Regards
