BLS site mentions the new PIO will not be issued. What about the existing ones? Didn't Govt. of India announced the PIO will be lifelong valid? Does it mean:

1. Existing PIO holders won't have to renew after 15 years, and still be classified as such throughout their lives?

2. Existing PIO will be expired as stipulated and we have to apply for a new OCI after 15 years?

What a load of BS.

My whole family became Canadian citizens in 2004. We got our passports cancelled after getting the citizenship/Canadian PP in 2004 soon.

For my wife and children I got PIOs (I don't remember why), but for myself I got OCI - and I was below 50 at that time.

Between 2010 and 2013, I went to Consulate as well as BLS three times to renew my OCI (due to new passport as well as turning 50) after doing the needful for renewal thru web and getting a number. Each time they said that I need a Surrender Certificate - even though the form for OCI clearly said that people who got their Canadian citizenship before 2009 do not need a surrender certificate (which is logical since there was no surrender certificate in 2004 when I surrendered my Indian citizenship). The problem they found with my passport was that it had a stamp of Cancelled - but not the stamp of Cancelled since the holder voluntarily acquired Canadian citizenship. (Funny - the three passports of my 3 family members all have the long cancelled stamped but not my passport!)

So after trying it twice without success, I finally decided to apply for surrender certificate - thought it would be $25 but atleast get it done with the silly practices of Indian authorities. But no, now they ask for a penalty - since I did not get the surrender certificate when I did acquire my Canadian citizenship.......(WTF!!!???)

So now what am I supposed to do???

Stupid but practical advice will be to Pay the penalty. how much is it ?

The surrender certificate is the most stupid, useless, moronic and retarded idea from the vast babudom in India. No doubt, some clever Babu came up with this idea.
Their logic is "Now that Bribe is illegal, lets make money penalizing people in every possible which way we can and make it look legal".

Think of it as a rising property taxes. Pay it and be done with it.

Also my statement above is based on real experience of minor travelling recently in March 2015.

You may be lucky...but as per rules, you're supposed to get the OCI re-issued for minors. You could be refused entry into the country.

you are right SS,

it is clearly mentioned on BLS site below::

IMPORTANT NOTE

For travel to India both documents, i.e. OCI certificate along with the passport containing the U-Visa sticker must be carried otherwise ENTRY into India will NOT be allowed.

Up to the completion of 20 years of age and once after completion of 50 years of age, it is MANDATORY that OCI Registration Certificate & U-Visa are re-issued on the passport. Otherwise ENTRY into India may NOT be allowed

However, between 21-50 years of age, re-issuance is not mandatory. In such cases, one must travel to India with OCI Registration Certificate, old Canadian Passport having U-visa and new Canadian Passport.

now I have to go for new OCI sticker on new passport for my son...(:-

Wef 29th Jan 2015 , OCI s would not be asked to produce their Passport containing the U Visa. The OCI card would be sufficient .

This does away with the need for getting the U sticker affixed every time the foreign passport is renewed ..

--------------------------------
Note: Vide circular No. 26011/06/2015-OCI dated 29th January, 2015 of Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, all immigration authorities in India will not insist on production of the foreign passport containing the 'U' Visa Sticker in the case of OCI Cardholders while they enter / exit India and the immigration clearance will be granted based on production of the 'OCI CARD ONLY'.

it is not right Fido...please check on same webpage mentioned about OCI sticker requires for Minors:

20 years of age or younger :
OCI registration certificate and ‘U’ Visa must be RE-ISSUED EACH TIME A NEW PASSPORT is issued up to the completion of 20 years of age in view of biological changes in face of the applicant..

Hello RBO:

That notice is the OLD general notice, not a new notification. If you read further below, for the age group 21-49, there is still requirement of carrying the old PP with U sticker, which according to the new circular is no longer needed.

Anyways, besides the 2 experiences noted on this thread - I am aware of atleast 3 other friend's kids who traveled within the last 2 years with OLD PP with U stickers and OCI card - none of them had any issues. They were no even delayed or questioned about the U sticker transfer which makes me believe that the rule is only for the website, not for implementation. In fact during our recent visit the immigration at Mumbai airport was the most smooth I have ever experienced - more than 50 open counters, small queue (3-4 deep) despite the fact that they photograph each visitor at immigration counter. Average processing time was between 1-2 minutes per applicant.

Good luck with your travel.

Hiren
