Fantastic idea TK, try the Indrail pass. Costs around $ 185 for unlimited travel on Indian rail network for 60 days.
Share your experience on CD ..

Sure. But my trip will done done only when I leave my current job.
I am expecting to do it around June 2016. It can also be earlier, based on the reach of certain milestones that I have in my life.

Read the Indrail pass rules. It is not very clear. If it does not have preferred reservation I will not take it. I have had the bad experience of travelling in an unreserved compartment and the experience was not that good. I prefer If I will have atleast 8 hours of good sleep in the trains and the use of toilets of the train, which is now good.

San-Hugo,
May be I was too ambitiuos. May be I will change it to 90 days. It all depends on how long I have the interest.
EVeryone is talking about travel within India, Europe, USA. My guess is that India offers so much, why not explore India. The climate is condusive, transport is cheap and food is even more damn cheap. Travel around India is one of the best things that one can do (Desi or Non Desi).

You travel like this in Europe and I will assure you that you go broke. I once stayed in a hotel in paris. Euro 600 for 2 nos. of double bedroom (went with relatives) and morning breakfast (Juice and toasted bread with jam/ butter option).

You are just assuming ALL your trains will be at night & you WILL get tkts for ALL of them.

Most tkts are booked months in advance by touts, agents etc. They go very fast..considering the population of India.

Also the trains are delayed a lot due to accidents, some other train in the front, other mechanical, electrical problems, signal problems, rains etc . So a 10 hr train journey , easily becomes 16 hrs. They almost always reach their destination late. So even if you take a night train , it will turn into a day train due to all these delays & stoppage.

So expect lot of delays , missed connections etc. If you think you are just going to HOP onto a train arrive in a city, see the city then HOP into another train & visit another city after 2 days, its not going to happen. Lot of train schedules & logistics are NOT going to coincide. And if you miss a connection, here & there, you are screwed, as the next train will be 2-3 days from now & might be fully booked with NO vacancy on it.

Lot of times the railway stations are far away from the city core. So once you arrive at a station , you still have to figure out, how to get into the city. The Taxis outside the station often RIP you OFF as they know you are out of town, & public transit is NOT that frequent or easily available in India.

Plus the traffic - To & Fro from the stations is also ridiculous & the roads/infrastructure also. Lot of people in India , miss their flights or trains , just due to the traffic, which makes it impossible to get their on time, unless they leave their home like 4-5 hrs before.

Just Getting down at Delhi Railway station & actually going into the city & seeing the various tourist attraction like Red Fort etc are two different things. The later is more difficult & expensive & time consuming than the former.

With this plan as someone mentioned , you will most probably just see the various trains & railway stations..LOL..& not the cities itself. Somewhere, somehow you will be forced to sleep in some hotel & avail of sight seeing tours like bus, private taxi etc, which will cost money & time. Plus cost of food.

Je Suis Around The India in 80 days !

Somethings which I bear in mind while traveling in India.

a. Plan out your itinerary completely and in advance since train bookings are not easily available later.

b. Check out the trains , fares , times taken b/w 2 places and prepare a list.

c. Whether you wish to travel in sleeper or AC is your choice per the weather and I feel safer in AC coaches though enjoy more interaction in sleeper ones.

d. There are International Tourist Bureau Offices in major cities to aid foreign tourists for Train travel . The are air conditioned offices , well supportive staff who help you in reserving your journey under Foreign Quota ... I always use this .. very convenient and no queuing up in a huge line ... But be sure to carry your iternary and make all reservations up front. This will save you a lot of time later on , get your plan straightened out as well and get you reservations which may be hard to get by later.

e. Be extra careful while on the train and off it as there are lot of thieves & con artists . Do not divulge your identity.

f. Eat at a Govt authorized canteen where available as unhygienic food can spoil your trips.

g. You can always cancel your reservation / re book @ any station in case your plans change - subject to availability and a cancellation fee.

h. When in a city , prepare in advance what & when to do .. stick to your plan.

i. Maintain a low profile and stay away from trouble.

Train travel in India is enjoyable if you have planned out well and have confirmed reservations which simply evaporate as the time nears .
