Dear fellows, i have following questions !

1. How long after applying for child benefit we actually start receiving it. Does it come as direct deposit in our account and we need to keep an eye on our account or we also get some intimation through postal mail.
2. Does the GST / HST come seperate or alongwith child benefits. Are we informed through any postal mail about it !
3. If any of my family members gets sick and needs medical assistance during the period when I have applied for health card but haven't received it yet, can we go to nearby clinics or hospitals on the piece of paper that we get when applying for health card, it shows my name and some other details about when I will have to renew my health card.

Thanks

1. It is possible to receive it after a month or so. If you have indicated for direct transfer by the bank, it will be credited to the mother's account. Also a quarterly summary will be sent by postal mail. Since your bank account is accessible online, I would suggest checking it periodically.

2. HST credit is a seperate credit and it will come to the principal applicant. This meant for the whole family.

3. As far as I know, the health card will become active only after 3 months (of landing or applying for the health card- I am not sure in which catagory you belong to). Unless you have a card that can be scanned, you will have to pay. But get the bill for the payment and then send it to OHIP to pay you. If you are eligible, then they will reimburse you the amount.

4. You have not mentioned about UCCB (Universal life) which is a $ 100 payout per child every month below the age of 5.

5. Also if you google, ontario govt. is giving other free benefits / money to low income ontarians (if you are a low income earner in Ontario is for you to decide).

Thanks TK, about no. 3 I know it will be applicable after six months, but my question was what to do if anything happens during those three months. I am a skilled workers category ( FSW) if this is what your are asking.
None of my kids is below 5 years so no universal benefit. Can you just outline few other benefits that newly landed immigrants like me can apply for .
Got my G license this time from Guelph :), thanks for all the useful tips that you and other senior members from this forum shared.

Dear TK, do we need to apply for UCB, universal child benefit separately...I mean doesn't it come automatically when we apply for child benefit, if any of my kids falls under five years ! Pls suggest as one of my friend is asking about it. Thanks

Hasni,
Please google and find out. I have been out of the system for 3.5 years now.
There a lot of schemes rolled out by the ontarion govt.. You will have to google and see how you can qualify for each one.
I can google for you and post, but them people will say that I am encouraging exploitation of Canada. So google and use the information yourself.

Universal Child Care Benefit

The Universal Child Care Benefit (UCCB) program issues a taxable $100 monthly payment to families for each child under the age of six to help cover the cost of child care.

Delivered by: Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) on behalf of Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC)

Eligibility Information.. : Applicants must meet the following criteria:

1) Be the primary caregiver of a child under six years of age on or after 1 July 2006
2) Be a resident of Canada

Other criteria may apply.

Application Information

Families already receiving the Canada Child Tax Benefit will automatically receive the Universal Child Care Benefit.
Families that do not receive the Canada Child Tax Benefit will be able to apply for the Universal Child Care Benefit by submitting a completed Canada Child Benefits application form to the CRA.
Persons who apply late may receive up to 11 months of retroactive payments, plus a payment for the month in which the application was received.

Dates and Deadlines. : The UCCB will usually be issued on the 20th of each month, and one week earlier in December.
Individuals who have not received their UCCB within ten business days following the date of issuance should contact the Canada Revenue Agency.

Related Information : The CRA must be notified in the case of a recipient's death. Payments made after the date of the death must be returned to the CRA.
