Coming back, same thing, but at Canadian port of entry, showed his US passport and Canadian citizenship certificate, no questions even asked why he does not have a Canadian passport. So I am not even going to waste money on maintaining both US and Canadian passport. Will just renew the US one.

"Canadian citizens returning to Canada who present documents, such as a Certificate of Canadian Citizenship, birth certificate, provincial driver's license, or foreign passport, instead of a Canadian passport may face delays or be denied boarding by transport companies."

So in order to avoid any inconvenience, you should still get a Canadian passport for your child even though he has a US passport.
