Hi,
Has anyone here ever bought travel insurance for their transatlantic trip or a trip to India.
The reason I ask is this: I am in the process of booking tickets to India for our family of four. It will cost me around $4,000. We plan to travel in December.
I just realized that the tickets being offered to us by our travel agent are non-refundable. There is however a provision to change the tickets for a charge of $350/person.
Now I am thinking this: I am incurring this big expense and god forbid, if any of my kids were to get sick or there was some problem at the time of travel, I would incur a big loss.
Therefore I looked into buying travel insurance (just for trip cancellation) and the quote I got was $315, which was about 8% of my travel expense.
I am wondering how people here hedge this risk?

That seems to be a fair rate for the insurance for the whole family. See if the tickets could be bought on a credit card. Some credit card companies will provide you with Free Re-booking if there is illness in the family. They have FREE health coverage and other benefits.. Talk with them first. Also see if the travel agent will honour the card.
Also see if they will provide you with an open ticket for the return, Find out how many days they will need for booking the return portion. DECEMBER is a very bad time for the travels. Because of the X-MAS season. So, take the journey and book the tickets NOW at that low low fares.
